About the Author

Hugh J. Foley received his B.A. from St. John Fisher College and his Ph.D. from the State University of New York at Stony Brook. He has taught at small liberal arts institutions throughout his academic career. He is currently a full professor at Skidmore College, where he has directed the Neuroscience Program and served as Mellon Fellow for First-Year Students. Hugh has taught the perception course throughout his career, as well as statistics and methodology courses. He has published articles in methodology, cognition, and perception–typically with his research collaborator, Mary Ann Foley. They have also received several grants from the National Science Foundation. Hugh has worked with Margaret Matlin on the previous two editions of Sensation and Perception.

The Appearance of a Good Textbook

Hugh Foley and Margaret Matlin have written a solid undergraduate Sensation and Perception text. It covers the expected material and the 5th edition has been updated with the latest research. A reasonable subset of it, anyway.

An introductory chapter outlines the primary schools of thought in psychology and their approach to sensation and perception. The second chapter on research methods presents psychophysics, signal detection theory and methods of recording brain activity. The following six chapters explore the visual system in depth, dividing the content into chapters introducing the visual system and its basic functions, followed by visual pattern perception, distance and size perception, color and motion. The next three chapters cover the auditory system, its basic functions, and auditory pattern perception. There is single-chapter coverage of the skin senses and the chemical senses (taste and smell), followed by a closing chapter on perceptual development. The greater emphasis of vision and hearing is consistent with both the quantity of available research and their greater importance to human perception.

The book has the customary set of instructional features, including bolded keywords and a glossary. It is well-referenced with current research, including an extensive reference section and a helpful author index. The content is well-written for the undergraduate level. Learning is supported by end-of-chapter summaries and end-of-chapter review questions. The text is peppered with links to an above average supporting web site. The online demonstrations are engaging--students enjoy sharing many of them with family and friends.

The instructor web site is carefully guarded by the publisher who, after much checking of an instructor's university affiliation, will serve up a password. The contents are disappointing, excepting a downloadable .pdf file of test questions. It is uncertain whether the publisher's security admonitions keep all instructors from releasing it to their students.

CAUTION: The publisher is willing to create "custom editions" using subsets of the chapters for different universities. This results in a cheaper paperback text that looks like a study guide for the hardback. This can be confusing to students, who sometimes buy the wrong book.

It's a good textbook. Instructors, consider adopting it; students, have confidence in it--and be sure to get the right edition.

I have a cut-down version of this text for a uni class on human information processing. I really hate this book!!

It is really hard to read, over technical and just drones on with key words.

The companion website is the singularly worst student/instructor companion website I have ever had the displeasure to use.

I chose this rating because the book is cram packed with information. Each chapter has a huge list of terms. There is so much information included that it is difficult to study from and understand it all for a non-science major, and I am NOT a science person!

About the Author

Robert Najarian is an actor, instructor, and fight director hailing from the East Coast, currently an Assistant Professor of Theatre at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. He has taught at movement and stage combat workshops, such as the National Stage Combat Workshop at North Carolina School of the Arts, The Winter Wonderland Workshop in Chicago, IL, and The Paddy Crean Workshop at the Banff Center in Alberta, Canada. As a fight director, Najarian has staged the violence for more than 100 productions for stage and film. Fight direction credits include Carmen and Macbeth with Boston Lyric Opera, As You Like It with Commonwealth Shakespeare Company, Don Quixote with Boston Ballet, Johnny Baseball with American Repertory Theatre, The Lieutenant of Inishmore and The Kite Runner with New Repertory Theatre, and She Kills Monsters with Company One. Gr. 4^-8. More than 170 years ago, a blind French boy at age 15 invented a system of raised dots on paper that allows the sightless to read and write. Without melodrama, Freedman tells the momentous story in quiet chapters in his best plain style, making the facts immediate and personal. At age 3, Louis Braille was blinded in an accident with a knife. From the age of 12, he worked doggedly, sometimes secretly through the night at a special school in Paris, punching dots on paper, trying to develop a simple code for the alphabet that the blind could read with their fingertips. Woven into the story is an awareness of how the blind child experiences the world, what he remembers. Tension mounts as he refuses to be discouraged by technical and bureaucratic setbacks, until eventually he proves his system to his school and finally to the world. The handsome book design is clear and open. A diagram explains how the Braille alphabet works, and Kate Kessler's full-page shaded pencil illustrations are part of the understated poignant drama. This biography from Freedman (The Life and Death of Crazy Horse, 1996, etc.) tells the familiar, moving story of the determination of Louis Braille, who did ``more than anyone in history to bring blind people into the mainstream of life.'' Blinded at age three by a freak accident, Braille was sent to the Royal Institute for Blind Youth in Paris at the age of ten. His first lessons were in ``embossing,'' where raised impressions were ``read'' by tracing their outlines with a finger. This slow, cumbersome process was sanctioned by the French government, but a retired artillery captain's speech on sonography--a military code based on dots and dashes punched into strips of cardboard--inspired Braille to develop his own system of dots based on the letters of the alphabet. Readers know the ending, but the somber story of this gifted, generous boy is a compelling one. Rigidly rendered black-and-white illustrations make the setting of the story real; useful diagrams of Braille's alphabet and the slate and stylus used to write are included. Inspiring

This fact based biography is one of the best I have encountered for children starting at about grade three. Adults will also benefit.
The book documents the life of Louis Braille. Born and raised in a small town near Paris, Louis suffered a tragic injury at the age of 3, which rendered him blind for life.
The story captures the true essence of courage and the triumph of the human spirit- to meet even the most seemingly insurmountable obstacles with dignity, tenacity and unshaken faith.
Louis did not give up.
Despite countless frustrations and heartbreaking setbacks, this remarkable individual's attempts at creating and perfecting the Braille system were successful and eagerly accepted and distributed world wide.
Unfortunately, Louis died in his early forties and was not here to witness the magnitude that his system bestowed on the world of the blind, their families, loved ones and associates. His system changed the lives and worlds of the visually impaired.
But he did pass away in peace and with the knowledge that his mission had been fufilled.
Louis Braille opened a door to the visually impaired, and in this way significantly transformed and enhanced many, many lives by providing this invaluable means of reading, writing, and communicating.
Louis Braille was absolutely a hero, and will remain so for all time.

Out of Darkness is a story about Louis Braille. Louis Braille was blind in the year 1812. It happened when he was a little boy. Louis was playing with a knife from his father's tools. He was trying to make holes in a piece a strong leather. The knife slipped and it stabbed his left eye. Louis had to stay in a dark room to help his eye heal. An infection spread from his left eye to his right eye. In 1812 there was no way to control his serious infection. 15 years later Louis Braille invented braille lettering for all blind people. I think that this is a good book for young readers to read because it shows good friendship between people.

The novel’s heroine, Celestina, abandoned as a child in a French convent, becomes an independent, witty, and accomplished elegiac poet who, in a reversal of the usual pattern of the courtship novel, acts as a mentor to several men in her life. Written at the beginning of the French Revolution, Smith’s novel depicts characters challenging both corrupt authority and conventional morality, exemplifying her hope that English society was on the verge of a great change for the better.

This Broadview edition includes a critical introduction and primary source material relating to the novel’s reception, its political contexts (writings by Reverend Richard Price, Edmund Burke, Mary Wollstonecraft, and Thomas Paine), and the author’s life.

I ran across Charlotte Smith when I was looking up Ann Radcliffe on another website. She took up writing to support herself and her children. Her husband was a deadbeat in debt. She not only influenced Radcliffe, but also Jane Austen. This is the first book I have read by her, and you can tell in what ways she influenced Radcliffe. Radcliffe perfected her descriptions of nature and landscape in The Mysteries of Udolpho. Smith too paints very dramatic scenes in Celestina. I would also place her among the romantic gothic writers.
Celestina was dropped off at a convent in France as an infant under secrecy. An English woman adopts her. Her son grows up with her and falls in love with her. On his mother's death bed, she wants him to marry his cousin to save the estate. (His deceased father was deeply in debt.) He is torn between his love of Celestina and his love of the estate and his promise to his mother. He decides to marry Celestina, but right before they are to be united, he gets an unsettling note and leaves to find out whether the contents are true or false. The answer will permit him to either marry Celestina or not. Their are lots of gossip and waging tongues, a lack of communication, and there are mysteries to be solved. It does not disappoint. If you like Ann Radcliffe, Jane Austen, and even Frances Burney, you will love Charlotte Smith.
