When we first become a Christian, we all start out with a simple, child-like faith just like pure, sweet vanilla ice cream. Over time we add other little bits of ideas into that simple faith. Some of those bits are good and add to our understanding and depth of faith; other ideas are toxic and strangle our faith. Flavors of Faith shares the author's journey of sorting out those good bits from the bad to get a better tasting and more satisfying flavor of faith in Jesus Christ.

Refreshing our Faith
By Dream 4 More Book Reviews
Tom Heil takes the reader into a sense of what flavor, or type of faith you are in, and many have shared or thought similar feelings. It is an easy, simple, today kind of read--conversational and engaging as if we were sitting drinking coffee or tea to talk about what kinds of faith we have.
Scared faith taught me how we view God. Do we see him as the Creator who watches our every move and will judge us accordingly, which scares the living crap out of most of us. Heil shows us how much God loves us and even sent His son to die on the cross for us; more than wanting to build a relationship but to be friends with us. Moreover, what I loved was to see how we try to "fill our holes" and even used the illustration of the parable: Prodigal Son. Perfection is not the factor but allow God to love on us and we can love him back--He is a good Daddy!
Lazy faith is where we get complacent, comfortable, and lazy as Christians; figuring that God loves us unconditionally and even pardons our sins that we for some odd reason keep doing it as if we are not living as someone who is free.
Active faith, loved the story of Cinderella (ever since I was a child since I felt like the unloved slave around the house and felt adopted at times) but this book gives a twist to the ending fairytale that I love so much where we can see the correlation how we are on fire for God, searching and wanting that dynamic experience, but we reject him the more God reveals Himself to us. I also think of all the people who have told me how they are scared of what God has shown them or told them, but you asked! Moreover, we have to invest in the talents God has given us, no matter how big or small they are. God has called you and entrusts you with the gift(s) He has given you. (I also taught on parable of talents on past ministry program).
There are other faiths the author mentions and each one drew you in, and felt connected, and willingness to be transformed in the likeness of Christ. Moreover, I loved attentive faith and excessive faith chapters. Most of us make sacrifices with short-term goals for our future ones, especially after working dead-end jobs in which the author shares his father's story facing this issue.
I enjoyed the parables, illustrations, and other ways for the reader to understand what it is like to be free, to have faith, and truly how bad sin is for us. Heil also wrote the book in a child-like manner where even youth can get it, or not so mature Christians can attain all that is inside without judging or bashing someone for not living right or according to God's will/commands. What a sense of humor too.
The author sent a complimentary copy (pdf) for a book review. (Willing to Review Christian Group).

A Book Your Students Might Actually Read!
By D. Hershey
Anytime I read a book I ask myself, "who could I recommend this book to?" Since I work with college students I am always on the lookout for books I could pass on to them. My friend Tom Heil's book, Flavors of Faith, is perhaps one of the best books for college students, and teenagers, that I have read.
Tom was campus minister with Christian Student Fellowship at Penn State, though he moved on to a new job in Ohio the year before I arrived at Penn State as a student. But through a number of friends he left behind, I have gotten to know him a little bit over the years, seeing him at weddings and other various events. He has years of experience working with young people and when he asked if I would be interested in reviewing his book, I jumped at the chance.
Flavors of Faith is a short book, coming in at under 100 pages. Almost for this reason alone, I will be recommending it to my students. College students are incredibly busy already, so they have little time to read books outside of their required reading. From time to time I meet students who have a passion to read and actually are reading books on their own time, which is always a pleasant surprise. When I recommend a book to these students, they may actually read it. But the majority of students simply do not read. I could recommend a book helpful to the lives of Christians in college or I could recommend War and Peace and it would make little difference, they're not going to read it.
I could see them reading Flavors of Faith. They could read a chapter here and a chapter there and finish it rather quickly. Don't get me wrong though, its brevity does not mean it is shallow. Tom packs a lot into these hundred pages, from personal stories and illustrations, to memorable quotes and challenging comments. Each chapter explores a different "flavor of faith" that Tom moved through in his life. In that way, it reads like a sort of spiritual biography. But more than that, it is a story that each of us who follow Christ moves through. I found myself resonating with many, if not all, the chapters. At times I could recall being in a similar place in my faith. A few of the chapters may have been describing where I am now.
Overall, this is a great book. I highly recommend it to college and youth pastors to read and to give out to their students. That said, it could certainly be beneficial for any Christian of any age, so if you get the chance, check it out.
Thanks Tom, for an honest and challenging read

Wonderful Book
By Princess Zaleigha
Flavors of Faith by Tom Heil was a pleasant surprise. It was a refreshing departure from the normal books on faith. It was lighthearted in places, and charming. The writer took me places I had not considered previously. It restored my faith, truly restored it.
I enjoyed the opening scenario of faith being compared to flavors of ice cream. How we, as human,s choose and take the parts we are comfortable with. But, faith is believing in the not-knowing. Ultimately, that is the message from the author.
This was a wonderful read. I would like to have had the theme throughout the entire book. But the story was especially well written and the subject matter was refreshing.
