One of the most thorough and comprehensive books I've seen about how many of the US environmental policies evolved. Layzer builds the cases with historical context, case law, and social aspects. For example, using the Dudley Street case in Boston, she builds the case for environmental justice issues. The events at Love Canal lead to the Superfund Act (CERCLA). A must-read for students of environmental policy!

Great background and implications

This book provides a slew of key environmental case studies. The key ones that developed the environmental laws of today (Love Canal) and ones (Chesapeake Bay) that are now pushing policy and environmental groups forward. Written in an interesting manner with policy outcomes and conclusions on each case. Provides the driving values and leads to discussions in classes.

Good Book. E Book not good for college though.

This was a really good book for my college class that looked at different environmental case studies. My only complaint is that I bought the kindle ebook version and it made it difficult to find page numbers by what the teacher was saying because my kindle doesn't show page numbers. If buying this for school I highly recommend the print version.

Rooney, former U.S. Ambassador to the Holy See, offers a true insider’s view into the complex world of the Vatican and the history of its relationship with America. President Ronald Reagan established diplomatic relations with the Vatican in 1984, more than 200 years after the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Rooney’s brilliant historical analysis illustrates how long-held biases on both sides prevented any movement toward official ties between these two great powers prior to the late 20th century. The author also provides an exceptional historical account of the life of John Carroll, the first Catholic bishop of the United States. Most fascinating are the personal glimpses that Rooney offers into his interactions with Vatican officials and even the pope himself—always humble and respectful, but also with an eye toward the ever-present politics involved. Rooney, U.S. ambassador to the Holy See from 2005 to 2008, has written a history of U.S.-Vatican diplomacy from the founding of this country to the present day. Given that both the U.S. and the Catholic Church have at their foundations the idea that human beings are endowed by their creator with certain inalienable rights, it may seem odd that full diplomatic relations were first established by President Reagan in 1984. About the Author

Beau Williamson, CCIE(r) No. 1346, is a consulting engineer in the Office of the CTO at Cisco Systems. His area of expertise is general IP networking, with a special focus on IP multicast. He is frequently called upon by Cisco customers and internal Cisco engineers around the world to consult on the design, implementation, and debugging of IP multicast networks. Beau is also the author and developer of Cisco's internal IP multicast training class, as well as a frequent presenter of IP-related topics at Cisco Networkers and CCIE conferences domestically and abroad.

Good foundational book, even in 2008

I was skeptical about buying a book this old, but I just finished it and am still slightly amazed at how little has changed in multicast technology in ~8 years. I have read Doyle's multicast coverage, listened to InternetworkExpert's excellent "class on demand" (CoD) on the topic many times, and worked through over half of their 20 CCIE lab scenarios, all of which have multicast sections. This doesn't make me an expert by any means, but I know enough now to recognize that the material in this book is still worth reading.

The differences between this book and Doyle's (2004) are:
- Williamson dedicates a lot more effort to explaining the mroute table. This was my single biggest stumbling block in multicast routing
- Doyle, IMO, gives IGMP a better treatment
- Doyle goes over mtrace and mstat
- Williamson spreads the information out over more pages via liberal usage of config snips and diagrams, often one per page. This allows him to go into *brutal, painful and excruciating* detail about every line in the mroute table, every flag, every state transition, etc.
- Williamson does a more thorough job of explaining exactly what happens in PIM-SM networks (100+ pages to Doyle's ~25)
- Doyle goes over Anycast RP and gives a better explanation of MSDN, which appears to have been rather cutting edge when Williamson put finger to keyboard

I finished the book in about a week of serious effort, but I skipped the following chapters (Cisco has not put much effort into the technologies described), leaving me with about 400 pages of groovyness:
DVMRP
CBT
MOSPF
Connecting to DVMRP Networks
and several sections of other chapters

To be sure, some things have changed. I didn't see any mention of the "ip pim autorp listener" command, which negates the need for sparse-dense mode when configuring Auto-RP (can't recall if Doyle mentioned that either). Also, in current versions of IOS one *does* need to specify the RP on the RP itself, whereas Williamson (and Doyle) explicitly say this is not the case (they were both right at the time of print, Cisco has changed this). Overall however, I would say that easily >95% of the material is solid here.

So which book to buy? Well if you're serious about the CCIE and/or running a multicast network you'll get both, and read them both several times. I do hope Williamson updates the book though, as he alludes to several draft proposals, and gives a "state of the multicast internet" address that I would like to know more about without digging through two dozen RFCs. Also, the few things that have changed would be a boon to the book.

Best Book on Multicast

I have been struggling to get through multicast for a long time now. The multicast being run on our production environment did not help me either. After reading alot of stuff on on internet i came across this book. This is one stop shop for all the multicast questions and concepts. After spending 2 long weeks on this book I am now teaching my colleagues how the multicast cookie crumbles.

The initial chapters take you from the origins of the multicast to what it is today. The book is pretty old but is still very well written. One of the books from Cisco Press which when was written, earth shook. :)

The book is very in depth with good focus and examples of programming needs and scenarios that back up the reading material. I especially like the fact that they cover the history of multicast and why and where the needs arrived for it. I am hoping for some supplemental information as things change in the IT world, and the original design evolves more with the increased data stream needs. Well worth the money, and worth the time to use and read for learning. I also like how the book does not focus on teaching a exam, but shows examples to strengthen the engineering design and true applications for world operations.

I'm the kind of girl that enjoys reading both the Da Vinci code and Gossip girl but when I came across the book pool boys I thought it would be a quick non-deep easy book to read. And to some extent I was right but I was wrong about the book being 2nd choice and not top notch because it was.

The three main characters, Brooke, Charlotte and Gorgia are three best friends that have been going to the Silver Oaks Country club since they were 5 years old. The girls are just looking forward to another summer of bikinis, boys and partying but all that changes when Brooke lays her eyes on the new lifegaurd Marcus. The three girls try flirting with him but Brooke gets pissed off that Marcus seems to like the new girl (Valerie) better.

The book takes place over a couple of weeks of the girls summer holidays and includes a breif romance period between Brooke and Marcus, A shocking revelation that Charlotte has a crush on the "Geeky" guy Caleb the girls have known forever and a hook-up between Charlotte and another old friend Robbie. Gorgia also has her fair share of excitment with her ex the tennis caoch at Silver Oaks and the new girl Valerie.

The girls break up and make up through out the whole book and it takes shocking twists and turns.

All in all the book was pretty good and I definitely recommend the book as a summer read to girls who enjoyed things like The A-list, Gossip Gril etc etc

This book is just like gossip girls and a-list. All the charactors are totally superficial and don't care about anything but themselves. None of them are likable. Read this if you want to read about a bunch of rich snobs who think they rule the world.

Silver Oaks Country Club is an exclusive place where secrets and scandals are the name of the game.

Brooke, Charlotte, and Georgia have grown up together and have always been best friends. No matter what. Then Valerie, the mysterious new girl, who seems to be all over all the pool boys, arrives.

Charlotte and Valerie become friends and are always hanging out and playing tennis together. Charlotte (referred to as "C") slowly shuts out her old friends. Brooke and Georgia feel betrayed.

Who likes who is the constant question in this book. It's very difficult to keep track of, too, because there are so many characters and the scenes change really fast. It was worth reading, but you have to pay attention all of the time to figure out who is doing what, and who they're doing it with!

Value can be created anywhere.

The lean movement is new, but value creation is as essential to the human experience as consuming or learning. We all do it. Our businesses do it.

However, somewhere along the line, as firms scale, they tend to lose their mojo. The markets shift. Their teams get too big. They stop rewarding failure. And their pace of innovation grinds to a halt.

These organizations need a hand. A book. A handbook. This handbook.

Why? Because it is thoroughly prescriptive.

Skunkworks, intrapreneurship, innovation labs and innovation colonies breed innovation. Innovation requires funding. Funding is contingent upon metrics. Metrics are tied to accounting. This process begets success, but then what?

How should compensation work? Answered in this book.

Where does vision fit in? Answered in this book.

What is the Lean Enterprise process? Answered in this book.

Most importantly, multiple paths to innovation are explored: incubation, acquisition, investment, etc. Options for new value creation abound.

Bring Lean Startup Principles to Your Company

The Lean Enterprise answers the question, "How can I drive corporate innovation by instilling the lean startup ethos in my organization?" The book answers this question incredibly well by advising executives to set up an innovation colony with the following conditions:
1. physical, financial, & organizational autonomy
2. equity incentives for employees as a trade-off for lower base compensation and the high risk of job loss
3. Access to a large pool of potential projects

At first, I really struggled with the authors' premise on two levels. First, I did not feel that companies would agree to the autonomy conditions. Second, I did not feel that many "regular" employees would agree to the high-risk, high-reward trade-off. However, it eventually dawned on me that the book is geared toward companies that do not want to lose the tiny but extremely valuable set of employees who would otherwise leave to start their own companies. If that keeps you up at night, this book is for you.

I appreciated the case studies sprinkled throughout the book. As far as I could tell, none of the companies individually featured applied ALL of the authors' lessons. However, collectively they did and I think it is reasonable that the authors put a stake in the ground for what the ideal innovation colony looks like.

Beyond that, you get a good survey of:
a. lean startup principles: disruptive ideas, small cross-functional teams, customer development, minimum viable product, rapid experimentation, pivot or persevere decision making based premeditated success criteria, etc.
b. entrepreneurial financing and venture-capital accounting
c. innovation accounting (i.e. focus on metrics that matter)

The book also does a good job of exploring different corporate innovation strategies including: incubating internally; acquiring early; and investing.

Finally, the book does a good job of giving credit to Eric Ries for the principles he popularized in his 2011 book. However, I would have like to have seen credit given to Steve Blank and Bob Dorf who kicked the whole thing off in 2005 with their exceptionally valuable but admittedly textbook like "4 Steps to the Epiphany."

Must read for Chief Innovation Officers

The most comprehensive work on the subject of applying Lean Startup methodology to large corporations to date. It covers a range of practical tactics for lean teams to investment approaches while keeping a consistent overall narrative.

This is not a typical coma inducing business books. It keeps you engaged to the last sentence. It's one of the most enjoyable business books I've read.

In addition to providing a great overview of different approaches, it's packed with the best interviews on the subject so far. The authors don't skimp and include interviews people who disagree with parts of their main innovation colony thesis.

It stays at a fairly high level, best suited to Innovation Officers and C-level execs. If you're a PM, team member, or accelerator manager looking for something about dealing with culture change and how to lead lean teams, you'll have to go back to Jeffrey Liker's The Toyota Way to Lean Leadership.

Overall, Lean Enterprise is a book that all large companies should steal liberally from when considering their strategy for innovation.
