But there's an odd detail she finds even more disturbing: both victims were related to city cops. A symbol glimpsed at both murder scenes leads to a racist hate group, but the taunting killer strikes again and again, leaving deliberate clues and eluding the police ever more cleverly. In the meantime, each of the women has a personal stake at risk--and the killer knows who they are.

2nd Chance speeds along at a Formula One pace through many tight curves, but unlike recent entries in the Alex Cross series, it doesn't sacrifice good characters to a twisted plot. Lindsay's the star, but there's a fine esprit de corps among the four women, who are even better developed here than in the first book. What makes them both convincing and interesting as a criminal-justice juggernaut is their willingness to stick their necks out, even if they suffer for it. It's been a long time since we've seen a bestselling author of Patterson's clout credit an assistant author on the cover, and good for Patterson for that. The credit is deserved. This is Patterson's richest, most engaging novel since When the Wind Blows and, as the second in his Women's Murder Club series (after 1st to Die), yet more evidence that this prolific writer can roam beyond Alex Cross with style and success. Like all Pattersons, the narration mixes first and third person the first here is voiced, as before, by San Francisco homicide detective Lindsay Boxer, while the third-person sections cover the doings of the other three members of Boxer's informal club, a reporter, a pathologist and a prosecutor, as well as the villain's shenanigans. The basic story line is vintage Patterson, i.e., a serial killer (here, one known as Chimera) goes on a calculated rampage until stopped by the good guys or in this case, gals. As the victims a young girl shot dead, an elderly black woman hanged, two cops pile up, it becomes clear to Boxer and others that they're up against a racist who hates black cops; is the killer a cop himself? The story ripples with twists and some remarkably strong scenes, particularly Boxer's in-prison interview with a crazed con. But what makes this Patterson stand out above all is the textured storytelling arising from its focus on Boxer's personal issues. In the first novel, Patterson personalized Boxer by dealing with her rare blood disease; here, it's the emotionally powerful introduction of Boxer's long-lost father into her life that galvanizes the plot, particularly as Patterson ties the man into Chimera's rampage. Second Chance

This is the second book that I have read of James Patterson's(Women's Murder Club) books and I'm can tell you that I'm really excited to be off to such a great start! I have done a lot of reading and I don't know why I didn't take the time out to at least look at his style, or characters. My mother-in-law who is 80, and knows me better than I do told me to try this series out and I love it! I've already downloaded the next three books. I don't like to tell anything about the story for fear of spoilers, I figure you can get the info from the book when you purchase it. I just like to say that I read so much that these are wonderfully written books! Check them out!

2nd Chance is an exciting read. Any one who is familiar with the San Francisco/Oakland bay area will see the places in 2nd Chance. The reader may have some idea as to who the killer is and maybe not. I know I had a couple of characters in mind and I was wrong. That is good writing. After the death of Lindsay Boxer's boy friend and lover in 1st to Die, Lindsay has gone over and beyond in her desire to solve any homicide that is committed in San Francisco. In 2nd Chance, Lindsay travels to Napa wine country and then on to Cleveland, Ohio where similar murders have been committed. Lindsay believes these are the same killer. She gets together with her friends, Jill, the deputy DA of San Francisco County, Claire, San Francisco ME, and her good friend from the San Francisco Chronicle, Cindy. Cindy does some research in the Chronicle's files to find some clues as to whom maybe the "Chimera." Lindsay father left when Lindsay was very young and he too was a SFPD officer, when he suddenly reappears into her life. But why now? Why would her father show up now? Does he have some connection with the killer? Why was a child murdered leaving church choir practice? There are many questions to be answered. You can find the answers byreading this fine novel. About the Author
Dr. Daniel W. Lewis' efforts led to the creation of Santa Clara University’s Computer Engineering department in 1988, providing its leadership for the first 18 years. During his tenure, Lewis established unique co-op and study abroad options that fit within the normal undergraduate four-year plan, the first graduate-level academic certificate programs for working professionals, a new interdisciplinary major in Web Design and Engineering, and a interdisciplinary minor in Information Technology and Society. Since 2004, Lewis has focused on K-12 outreach in engineering and computing, raising more than $1.7M from NSF and private sources, and providing professional development for more than 200 K-12 teachers and summer camps for more than 2,000 K-12 students.

Prior to joining the University in 1975, Lewis worked for six years at General Electric’s Aerospace Division where he designed a fault-tolerant clocking system for one of the first triple-redundant automatic landing systems for commercial aircraft. He has consulted for a number of Bay Area companies, including the Singer-Link Company, where his design of new algorithms and a corresponding modular array of VLSI circuits became the basis of a new product line of real-time computer graphics systems.

Great for learning the basics of embedded programming

It's a great book for exactly what its title says: embedded software fundamentals. The author does a great job explaining the fundamentals of embedded programming. He explains this using an ARM processor so keep that in mind. ARM is pretty much an industry standard though, so this is a good example processor to use. Obviously to program the ARM board, you're still going to need the ARM-Cortex Mx User's manual, the manufacturer's reference manual, etc...you're still going to need to use all the data sheets. This book teaches you the basics. You then go into these ARM/manufacturer manuals and put what you learned from both into programming the board and peripherals.

In a nutshell, this book is a great supplement to teach you the general concepts of embedded programming. You'll also need the actual chip's user's manual to program the chip.

It's a book for those who are the new in MCU programming and want to start with Cortex. Most of the chapters are useful at the beginning period for those people. This book may be interesting for the start time in practice of ARM MCU for those, who are familiar with MCU. The advanced MCU users will found some interesting moments in chapters 5, 6 (Programming in Assembly) and in chapter 12 (Shared Memory).For experienced "not ARM MCUs users" this book is a good handbook.

Exquisite children's classic

Rumer Godden, the author of those absorbing novels about nuns of yesteryear, "Black Narcissus" and "In This House of Brede," both successfully filmed with Deborah Kerr and Diana Rigg respectively, tries her hand here at a book for younger readers. This is the tale of a doll "family," not related by biology but the simple fate of being thrown together. Although there are nominal mother and father dolls, the real head of the household is Tottie, a wooden farthing doll, wise beyond her childish appearance. The dolls' relative happiness and the way it is threatened by the appearance of Marchpane, an expensive, arrogant and, as it turns out, really malevolent interloper, makes for surprisingly gripping drama. Indeed, the tale of Marchpane's machinations and the tragic climax of the story may be too intense for younger or more sensitive children, for whom this book needs to be introduced with care. For the rest of them, and for adults who simply like a good story, "The Dolls' House" still exerts its considerable spell. Tasha Tudor's illustrations are a notable contribution as well.

This book was better than I remembered it being.

Fortunate to have read this book at the age of ten, I never forgot it. Having recently read some of Rumer Godden's adult books, I decided to purchase a copy. The money I paid was well worth it. The book is still a wonderful read. If you are an adult who read it as a child, re-read it. If you've never read it, you will enjoy the drama about a family whose home and happiness are threatened and how they dealt with it. This is a must-read for all Godden fans. All her storytelling skills are used, deft foreshadowing, proper use of detail and strong dramatic scenes. It was written for children but it can be enjoyed by anyone who enjoys fine writing.

wonderful complex characters

Quite affecting. A very rich story of the "family-dynamics" in an antique doll-house. Perhaps best read to the younger child (under 10). There are some very complex emotions at play. My 7 year old burst into tears at Birdie's "sacrifice". Still it's important for young readers to experience a full range of emotions when reading, espcecially as they move into chapter books
