Review

“Greg Mitchell’s storytelling mixes the modern pace and stripped-down narrative of a Ted Dekker with the spiritual tensions of a Frank Peretti. Enemies of the Cross is an imaginative, sobering page-turner.” —Eric Wilson, New York Times best-selling author of Fireproof, Valley of Bones, and One Step Away

“Greg Mitchell once again takes us on an unforgettable journey through the realm of evil and reminds us that faith and courage shine brightest in the blackest night.”—Alton Gansky, Christy Award finalist, Angel Award winner, and author of Angel and Enoch

An obsessively dark and scathing tale
By Jason Brown
The Strange Man was downright eery.
This... to put plainly, was immensely frightening! But it was worth the scare to know how far God would go to protect His Own.
The good news is, Dras is alive. The bad news, while he's in jail, you have to put up with his obsessive brother, Jeff, who's become so obsessed with finding out the truth of what happened to Dras that he doesn't notice what's happenin to those around him in his life.
Okay, not only those who mattered to Jeff in a personally good way, but also the village bigmouths, like Earl, who headed a hunt to find Lindsey's killer in The Strange Man, has a bigger role with a bigger mouth. Flat-out condemning Christianity, first by the use of Dras with the false conviction of being called a killer (if you read the first one, it's no spoiler), then going further into insults and name-calling.
Not only that, but Jeff also calling out each denomination's materialistic hypocrisy with what they teach then a turnaround with what they publicly say outside church walls.
Then Rosalyn with how she scathingly condemns the whole church town of Greensboro for preaching love, love, then spewing extreme hate toward Dras.
As if that weren't enough for a dark tale (what Christian these days hate being called hypocritical if they don't want to believe it, let alone acknowledge it?), there's also the Strange Man himself, a truly bizarre and extremely evil presence among people, tempting people with half-truths and tempting lies, along with a whole gang of creatures to do things at his whim.
There are mysteries to figure out, betrayals that slap your face hard, yet there's also hope that's still prevalent.
Evil is shown with no sugarcoating, but not full-out gratuitous, either. So, don't worry, nothing R-rated here.
Even people who have a history of a dark past are to shown to have the ability and capacity to change for the better. Even if it comes with a struggle.
The writing itself is almost like dark poetry, and is extremely well-written far as I can tell. And if you think the title is akin to anti-Christian, it turns out to be Biblical, and relevant.
At this point, I'm sure I can't wait for this Dark Hour to come, to see what all will happen. I'm sure I will not be prepared for anything that will happen. Nonetheless, it should definitely be a thought-provoking tale to keep me up most of the night.

Another chilling suspense thriller that will leave you definitely wanting more!
By Pirate2240
Looking for a really great series of books guaranteed to leave you wanting to sleep with the light on, but written by an extremely talented Christian author? Then look no further than The Coming Trilogy Series by Greg Mitchell.

I got hooked on this trilogy after being a huge fan of such talented writers like Ted Dekker and Stephen King. You know the kinds of books that make you jump at noises while you're reading it, but it's so great you can't put it down?

This series is about the Bogeyman or as he is also known as The Strange Man. A presence so evil that he's been staking his claim in the small town of Greensboro since its introduction. That is where the legends and myths came from surrounding late night stories around the campfire, geared to scare you. Only this time, the Bogeyman is real and you're biggest downfall is believing he doesn't exist.

Picking up where the first book left off, Enemies of the Cross continues to struggle to understand what is happening to the small town of Greensboro. Now that a horrible murder has taken place and the town believes that the killer has been caught and is now awaiting his final trial for the death penalty, Pastor Jeff Weldon believes that his brother Dras is innocent. However he feels more than responsible. When Dras came to him that fateful night telling him of the Strange Man and the evil running the town, he didn't believe him. Now Jeff feels that he has to prove his brothers innocence.

Jeff's faith in God is about to be put to the final test as the evil surrounding the town realizes that he stands in the way. They aren't about to let their plans to control the town and bring about the Dark Hour be revealed by Jeff's persistent investigation. Now more than ever, the town believes that Jeff is letting his investigation to prove his brother's innocence cloud his responsibility to run the church and will stop at nothing to have him removed.

Meanwhile the Bogeyman's plans continue to grow darker by the hour as the North Woods surrounding the lake continue to consume all life that draws near and with that, the more powerful he will become especially if he can remove God from the equation.

I received Enemies of the Cross compliments of Greg Mitchell who was kind enough to send me a complimentary copy to review. Being such a huge fan of his first novel in the series, The Strange Man, when I saw that his next one was available in print, I knew I had to read it. Once again, I was not disappointed. Since this is a trilogy, the mystery will not be solved in this one, but will come to a climax in anticipation for the final book, Dark Hour, yet to be available. I LOVED this series and have to rate it a 5 out of 5 stars. Any book that can keep me glued to the pages, and reading it with the lights on, is a best seller for the suspense thriller genre in my opinion. That is what makes an excellent book.

A Good Read!
By Melanie
After reading The Strange Man earlier this year, and its shocking ending, I was looking forward to Enemies of the Cross and surprised by some of the things/twists in it.

Greensboro is a creepy town and while I didn't find myself scared that often, there were a few times (especially when by a window) that I found myself somewhat creeped out (imagining if I were to all of the sudden start hearing some tapping on the glass).

While the first book in The Coming Evil trilogy dealt more with Dras Weldon, Enemies of the Cross centers more around his brother, Jeff. I found it really interesting to get to know the characters and more of what has been happening in the town.

There were a couple of things I didn't personally care for - one being how Jeff heard God talking to him in his head (page 285).

Enemies of the Cross dealt a lot with the spiritual realm (i.e. demons, angels), which I found interesting and, at times, bizarre (in a good way).

Overall, Enemies of the Cross was a good semi-suspenseful read that I liked. If you enjoy creepy and/or books dealing with demons/spiritual warfare, I think you might like this book as well... although you might want to read book one first because this book picks up right where The Strange Man left off. I'm looking forward to book three, to see how this trilogy concludes. :)

*I received a complimentary copy of this book for my review. I was not required to give a positive review, only my honest opinion - which I've done. All thoughts and opinions expressed are my own.*

The Lady Tasting Tea: How Statistics Revolutionized Science in the Twentieth Century, by David Salsburg

At a summer tea party in Cambridge, England, a lady states that tea poured into milk tastes differently than that of milk poured into tea. Her notion is shouted down by the scientific minds of the group. But one guest, by the name Ronald Aylmer Fisher, proposes to scientifically test the lady's hypothesis. There was no better person to conduct such a test. For Fisher had brought to the field of statistics an emphasis on controlling the methods for obtaining data and the importance of interpretation. He knew that how the data was gathered and applied was as important as the data themselves.

In The Lady Tasting Tea, readers will encounter not only Ronald Fisher's theories (and their repercussions), but the ideas of dozens of men and women whose revolutionary work affects our everyday lives. Writing with verve and wit, author David Salsburg traces the rise and fall of Karl Pearson's theories, explores W. Edwards Deming's statistical methods of quality control (which rebuilt postwar Japan's economy), and relates the story of Stella Cunliff's early work on the capacity of small beer casks at the Guinness brewing factory.

The Lady Tasting Tea is not a book of dry facts and figures, but the history of great individuals who dared to look at the world in a new way.

Amazon.com Review
Science is inextricably linked with mathematics. Statistician David Salsburg examines the development of ever-more-powerful statistical methods for determining scientific truth in The Lady Tasting Tea, a series of historical and biographical sketches that illuminate without alienating the mathematically timid. Salsburg, who has worked in academia and industry and has met many of the major players he writes about, shares his subjects' enthusiasm for problem solving and deep thinking. His sense of excitement drives the prose, but never at the expense of the reader; if anything, the author has taken pains to eliminate esoterica and ephemera from his stories. This might frustrate a few number-head readers, but the abundant notes and references should keep them happy in the library for weeks after reading the book.

Ultimately, the various tales herein are unified in a single theme: the conversion of science from observational natural history into rigorously defined statistical models of data collection and analysis. This process, usually only implicit in studies of scientific methods and history, is especially important now that we seem to be reaching the point of diminishing returns and are looking for new paradigms of scientific investigation. The Lady Tasting Tea will appeal to a broad audience of scientifically literate readers, reminding them of the humanity underlying the work. --Rob Lightner

From Publishers Weekly
The development of statistical modeling in primary research is the underreported paradigm shift in the foundation of science. The lady of the title's claim that she could detect a difference between milk-into-tea vs. tea-into-milk infusions sets up the social history of a theory that has changed the culture of science as thoroughly as relativity did (the lady's palate is analogous to quantum physics' famous cat-subject), making possible the construction of meaningful scientific experiments. Statistical modeling is the child of applied mathematics and the 19th-century scientific revolution. So Salsburg begins his history at the beginning (with field agronomists in the U.K. in the 1920s trying to test the usefulness of early artificial fertilizer) and creates an important, near-complete chapter in the social history of science. His modest style sometimes labors to keep the lid on the Wonderland of statistical reality, especially under the "This Book Contains No Equations!" marketing rule for trade science books. He does his best to make a lively story of mostly British scientists' lives and work under this stricture, right through chaos theory. The products of their advancements include more reliable pharmaceuticals, better beer, econometrics, quality control manufacturing, diagnostic tests and social policy. It is unfortunate that this introduction to new statistical descriptions of reality tries so hard to appease mathophobia. Someone should do hypothesis testing of the relationship between equations in texts and sales in popular science markets it would make a fine example of the use of statistics. Illus.

From Library Journal
This is an insightful and revealing history of how the emergence of statistics in scientific research revolutionized the sciences. Without using a single mathematical equation, Salsburg, a former Harvard professor and a prolific writer with three books and numerous articles on applied statistics, clearly discusses some major advances in statistics in the last century. He covers most of the major contributors to the field and dedicates two chapters to the contributions made by women. Salsburg also does an excellent job of showing how statistics has had an impact in the development of other sciences likes agriculture, cancer research, and econometrics as well as its influence in industry, where statistical methods are widely used in quality control and for the analysis of operational research. General readers with little mathematical background will be able to grasp Salsburg's lucid concepts with ease. Specialists will also enjoy reading this book for its interesting presentation and for the many biographical notations about some of the most influential researchers in the field. Since Salsburg focuses on the 20th century, readers interested in learning about earlier developments in statistics can look at Stephen M. Stigler's Statistics on the Table (LJ 10/1/99). Nestor L. Shaky foundation
By Reviewer
This book was hard for me to put down. It is not a how-to book. Instead, it addresses the very foundations of statistics. As a practitioner but relative novice in the sophisticated use of statistics, I was stunned and frankly thought it ironic that there is so much uncertainty in the appropriate use, usefulness and meaning of statistics. It played with my mind on what is real in science. The history of the statistical revolution he describes is fascinating as personalities, perceptions and interpretations clash across the years. It should provide valuable insight to those whose work depends on the appropriate use and interpretation of statistics. But the book must cause them pause as the author concludes in the final paragraph, "the statistical revolution in science stands triumphant...[but]...it stands triumphant on feet of clay."

A wonderful romp through the statistical methods and their practitioners of the twentieth century.
By ARG
A wonderful romp through the statistical methods and their practitioners of the twentieth century. There is a concerted effort to NOT include math notation or heavy lifting - this will not replace a stats textbook, it is decidedly and avowedly not meant to. Instead, intuition and philosophy of these advances are summarized. I am sure that my familiarity with the math helped, but I don't think it was necessary to understand the book. In fact, the Confidence Interval being process not number is the best way I have ever heard that put. I have a way to say it and I can only say it that way to be sure that I haven't flipped the meaning. This was a great example of how Salsburg takes big concepts with lots of math and explains them in intuitive ways. More than that though he makes these names from tests and bootstraps and whatnot and makes them real live people with stories and ambitions. There is also a great sense of the personal - statisticians need to interact with their data - you cant make a good valid clear model if you have no idea what the data really mean. Great lesson for everyone.

By Stijn Debrouwere
Okay, but not great. The author seems to be so scared that people might not understand what he's talking about that he makes essentially zero effort to even minimally explain the statistical concepts encountered along the way. This leads to absurdities where you're reading a chapter on "some thing someone did that does something or other about this problem, but you wouldn't understand it anyway so let's leave it at that." I imagine the author wants to reach a broad audience, and science writing is incredibly difficult, but there are examples of pop science and history of science writing that do manage to give people at least a rough understanding of the topics under discussion. Salsburg seems to have given up on that goal, probably thinking that, if you're not a statistician, there's no chance of really understanding any of it anyway.

That said, it's not like there's a glut of books about the history of statistics, and it does highlight some of the main developments, discussions and battles (albeit vaguely), so still a 3/5.

Review
"Weaving insightful treatments of major transformations of the presidency into a lively narrative that encompasses every chief executive, Milkis and Nelson have written an essential history of the office. Still going strong after a quarter of a century, The American Presidency has been a favorite text for generations of my students." -- Bruce Miroff "Milkis and Nelson's The American Presidency: Origins and Development, 1776-2014 is an outstanding introduction to the U.S. presidency. It is informative and crisply written. Students like it and it I find it very easy to teach from. It provides students the information they need on the history and development of the U.S. presidency in a format that is accessible without sacrificing intellectual rigor." -- David E. Lewis "The Milkis and Nelson text is an excellent example of how to ground Political Science within an historical setting and create a narrative of institutional development. It strikes a good balance between the presidency as an institution occupied by a strong singular personality and the presidency as the executive power of an entire country, growing larger as the country does as well. The chapters, while focusing on the iconic presidents, also do an effective job of framing presidential challenges within themes, such as war powers, hurdles in dealing with the bureaucracy, fighting for (or losing) authority within the political system, etc. The choice to begin with creating the constitutional president and then working through a chronological succession is beneficial for students to grasp how the institution has changed over time and just as importantly, why it has." -- Timothy Lindberg "I would not use anything else. Milkis and Nelson provide historical examples and interpretation of the important events in the history of the presidency and of how the presidency as an institution has changed over time. I don't think the book has any weaknesses. The writing is top notch. I've had only positive comments from students about the book." -- Kenneth Stevens

Counterpoint: The Polyphonic Vocal Style of the Sixteenth Century (Dover Books on Music), by Knud Jeppesen

This classic introductory text focuses on the polyphonic vocal style perfected by Palestrina. Unlike many other texts, it maintains a careful balance between theoretical and practical problems, between historical and systematic methodology. The result is an exceptionally useful resource, ideal for classroom use in teaching modal counterpoint.
In Part One, Knud Jeppesen (1892–1974), the world-renowned musicologist and leading authority on Palestrina, offers a superb outline history of contrapuntal theory. He begins by exploring the beginnings of contrapuntal theory from the ninth to the fourteenth centuries. This is followed by separate discussions of each succeeding century, the styles of Palestrina and Bach, the "Palestrina Movement" after Fux, and more. The section ends with illuminating coverage of notation, the ecclesiastical modes, melody, and harmony.
The second part of the book contains an extended treatment of "species" counterpoint in two, three, and four parts, as well as counterpoint in more than four parts, and specific discussions of the canon, the motet, and the Mass. Throughout, the text is generously supplied with musical examples―exercises, solutions, and illustrations, including many by the great composers. For this edition, the distinguished scholar Alfred Mann has contributed a new foreword to Jeppesen's classic study. Now available in paperback for the first time, it will be welcomed by musicians, composers, theorists, musicologists―any student of counterpoint and the Western musical tradition.

Unabridged Dover (1992) republication of the edition published by Prentice-Hall, Inc., New York, 1939.

Jeppesen's explanation of Counterpoint
By James Gabbard
It is both wonderful and disturbing to see how a few basic priciples form the basis of music written during a span of over four centuries. The book came highly recommended to me and I pass that recommendation on to others. One caveat: ya gotta really love composing and music theory to make this book worthwhile.

A useful classic for developing composition skills.
By Hexagram of the Heavens
I leave the original review intact below. I still love Jeppesen, and his method creates beautiful exercises. His guidelines for melody writing are unique and priceless. I leave the five stars, but I have some new criticisms.

To wit: I now believe that when Fux evoked the spirit of Palestrina, p. 18 of Alfred Mann's translation, he was just blowing some rhetorical smoke. He was not trying to emulate Palestrina at all, he was teaching Zarlino's system of modes based on the hexachord. When Jeppesen revised the method and chopped out the Lydian mode, saying that Palestrina really only used the Ionian, this was a big misunderstanding of Fux's teaching. Jeppesen's system uses only Ionian, Dorian, Phrygian, Mixolydian and Aeolian. Fux's also has the Lydian with Bb. Yes it's superficially the same as the Ionian, if all you are doing is species counterpoint exercises. But in real composition, we have to modulate, and modulation to any of the six possible cadence points of the hexachord was what Fux was teaching, and Jeppesen has overlooked this because he is directly focused on Palestrina.

There is one other shortcoming in Jeppesen's method, which I merely report from experience. In disregarding the distinction between the plagal and authentic modes, Jeppesen overlooks the importance these complementary structures have both in fugal answers and in the disposition of the four voices in the Gamut.

Now the original review:

This has been one of my favorite books for 30 years. It may be that Peter Schubert's book is more practical for the beginning counterpoint student. But I love Jeppesen.

The standard text of the 18th century, used and endorsed by Bach, Mozart, Haydn and Beethoven, was J. J. Fux's 1725 book "Gradus ad Parnassum", available in English as "The Study of Counterpoint." Fux's book is in the archaic "dialogue of teacher and pupil" style, and it's a tough read. Not that Jeppesen's easy... but Jeppesen was, 80 years ago, the authoritative update to Fux, with a better historical perspective (although there are some modern scholars with different ideas) and remains a very practical book. (Acknowledged: you must read C-clef, or be willing to learn. It's not rocket science.)

Why study 16th c. counterpoint? It's a very clear, classic style. Bach's counterpoint style is a difficult starting place for someone who wants to learn this art, but AFTER reading Jeppesen, it becomes apparent what some of Bach's operating principles were that evolved from the earlier style. In fact, the whole development of western harmony up through jazz is easier to understand once you have read and understood Jeppesen - and let me also mention that the historical overview with which he opens the book is worth the price of the book by itself.

Wonderful text - for serious music students a must have
By Chris Sahar
I disagree this book's use is limited to 16th century counterpoint. The only case I would agree is a student new to counterpoint who jumps right to the exercises in species counterpoint.

In reality, 16th century counterpoint is the gateway to understanding 18th century and even more modern usage of it as you learn an excellent standard to compare later developments. Also, the exercises in writing imitation, invertible counterpoint are great. And yes the essay on its development thru the 19th century is fantastic.

Now I will not say this is the most comprehensive - for that there is a French tome published in the early 20th centurey which is encyclopedic. The name slips my memory.

But for compactness and depth of its topic and providing its context as well as the great exercises, Jeppesen's will be a book you will always return to. That is rare for textbooks.

I'd say this book is especially good for music composers and song writers (yes pop ones too). The author spends much time discussing melodic writing in addition to contrapuntal writing.

Finally the presentation is far more in line with modern readers' experience, the old presentation of question and answer and deduction may have its merits but I agree it is a tough way to present a new topic to someone. Start with this, then go to Fux and studies of scores (yes Counterpoint and Compositions is a good text when shown by a teacher how to employ the methods, otherwise it can be limiting in its impact upon learning).

In sum, for the serious music student this should be one of the 10 - 20 essential texts in your library. For music lovers steeped deeply in Medieval and Renassaince music and some understanding of music theory, this would enhanace your appreciation of the craft and the music - and hey you may find yourself writing some great liturgical music for your choir in the end!
