Superb - highly recommended

I read this in a single sitting. Ostensibly it's a critique of the world of Michel Houellebecq but it effectively departs that brief and becomes an elemental consideration of the value of literature itself, the relationship between reality and fiction, reasons for living and disillusion, between the reader and art, and the very bleak questions these relationships pose when honestly cross-examined. Jeffery articulates the brutal, cynical red-raw hopelessness that distinguishes Houellebecq's work, in which all of the lies and protective skins which enable us to live our lives with hope and cheer are ruthlessly stripped away. However, Jeffery refuses to accept "depressive realism" as the last word and navigates with great humanity and lucidity along a difficult route to seek out a more affirmative resolution, finally hoisting pessimism by its own petard of uncertainty.

Ben Jeffery is young but he has already found his "voice". It is, on the basis of this volume, destined to be a major one in the world of criticism and letters.

Spot-on Critique of Depressed Art

The tradition of pessimism is long and hallowed in both art and literature. Heck, it's a style onto itself - I'd even say to be taken seriously as a work of art, literature is expected to delve into the dark recesses of nihilism, almost to a fault. It means the author hasn't compromised truth for illusory happiness. It means he/he has been willing to enter the dark side of life to come out with pellets of authenticity. Jeffery's observations on this topic - using Houellebecq's novels as a baseline - are both astute and profound. He rightly puts the finger on the self-centered individualism and materialism that underwrites it all. When the only real thing are deemed to be the flesh and the self, all of life withers away in meaninglessness in the face of the individual's inevitable death. All else becomes commentary, and futile commentary at that. Book also goes into cool forays about the role of literature generally, and spares no brutal honesty toward its chosen topic. Not too long, stylish journalistic writing, genuine insight - not enough of these books around. Highly recommended.

An excellent collection from a skillful painter.

I initially refrained from purchasing this collection due to the price-to-page-count ratio even though I have been a follower of Kent Williams' work for many, many years--has it really been over two decades? I could not resist once it became available on Amazon for the current sale price however, and am pleased with the purchase for this amount. It an excellent collection of the artist's current work, which is striking to behold. There is a vitality to this series of paintings that is very refreshing, and the artist's figurative work is (as always) topnotch. As both introductions* discuss, it is interesting to consider the spatial relationship of the subjects to their environments, be it as a dilettante or fellow artist studying technique.

This collection is not as large as the excellent 2008 AMALGAM collection, but is still an impressive and well-put together publication. Be warned, the customary intentional blank pages that frequent art collections are present in this volume, although not to the degree I usually expect (I only include this as some buyers are surprised when they discover the practice). Almost every painting is viewable online if one feels the need to seek them out, which may be worth the effort if unsure about acquiring the collection. I prefer having book in hand while studying art, and recommend making the investment.

*Side note: the Alex Ross that writes the second introduction is not Alex Ross the painter/illustrator but rather the New Mexico critic, curator, and writer. This does not diminish the perceptiveness of the introduction, but merits knowing for anyone whose knowledge of both artists stems from their respective comic book work and may be curious what the aforementioned artist Ross might have said about Williams.

Reinventing Architecture

One of the few books that offers a non-superficial view on `reinventing architecture' - that is: renovation and interior design. From a conference it's a bit jumpy but most of these article / chapters are really interesting. One or two are a bit cumbersome. They're also focused on a range of issues and places: Australia, South Africa, the UK, the US to name a few. The editor has linked them to ensure it flows - and it does. It's a pity that the images are black and white but it looks great. That's not untypical of design books but in this case it doesn't hide shallow content. On the contrary, this book calls itself socio-political and tries to do the opposite of what happens in glossy books - especially the ones that flood the interior design market. It's also well written throughout. That's not common with this type of book with different authors often better at expressing themselves than others. It's much more than an introduction to its subject and requires prior knowledge of the subject matter - but it is one of the first books to look at its subject from this perspective. Overall, a must for students, academics and practitioners (I would say) involved in building renovation or interested in design as part of a bigger social and political context.

Reinventing Architecture

An attempt to underline the importance of building renovation. It is important of course. This emphasises it. It brings together authors from various countries who all discuss an issue that seems relevant to what the book calls socio-political issues. Some of the essays are better than others, as you would expect. One talks about the use of `waste' and links with environmental issues, another examines the building of a new South African identity through interiors of buildings, another does the same in the context of Belfast. It comes out of a conference but is a select set of the essays. Their diversity makes the book interesting. Their similarities are just evident enough to give it coherence. It's not 100% clear who it's for: architects, interior designers is the most obvious answer. But it could be of interest to other people as well - cultural theory bods, design historians etc. It's emphasis is contemporary design and social conditions but there are some references to major historical design issues too - Ruskin etc. It's well worth reading for those interested in architecture and interiors and gives an international perspective on renovation as well.

Started out as a good read but-----

it simply jumps all over the place as you read on. Sure, the author knows of what he writes, but he assumes you do,too. He drops so many names on a single page that it is impossible to know who is who, exactly. There are so many marriages, divorces, sons, daughters, nieces, nephews, etc., covered, as the chapters progress, that I found myself getting more and more irritated with the author. Talk about going off on a tangent: You may be reading about a given businessman's push to move merchandise, in one paragraph, and the next thing you know you're reading a history of some artistic or architectural movement, in the next, never to come back to the original subject. A great editor could go through this entire book and make it into a great read by doing a complete reworking of how the material is presented and organized. Unfortunately, I believe the material presented in this book is "organized" pretty much how it came from the mind of the author. That is to say,it's uncomfortably "free-flow." You will learn a great deal from this book, but you may get very frustrated, as I did, trying to keep everything straight.

Great book! For history buffs who like the personal side.

This is a great book. It's chock full of history told in an easy-to-read style. Leon Harris reveals the struggles and successes of 12 of the earliest Jewish retailers of America including Levi Strauss, Sears, Roebuck, Neiman, Marcus etc. It appeals to readers on many levels. First it is an historic account of the people whose names have become so familiar as store-names that we have forgotten there were ever people with those names. "Merchant Princes" includes many personal anecdotes about the founders of the stores and their families, retailing practices of yester-year and what these merchants did with their incredible wealth. Told by a Jew, about Jews, it reveals in surprisingly candid ways the ostracism of Jews in this country addressing how this all began. It's a book you can put down and pick up at any point without losing the flow. Jews will love it. Gentiles will be impressed. I was!
