Lafayette Park has not received the level of international attention that other similar projects by Mies have. This may be due in part to its location in Detroit, a city whose most positive qualities are often overlooked in the media. This book is a reaction against the way that iconic modernist architecture is often represented. Whereas other writers may focus on the design intentions of the architect, authors Aubert, Cavar and Chandani seek to show the organic and idiosyncratic ways that the people who live in Lafayette Park actually use the architecture and how this experience, in turn, affects their everyday lives. This inspiring 288-page volume from Metropolis books captures the convivial atmosphere the authors found at Detroit's Lafayette Park, a housing developement designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe that encompasses 32 hectares of towers, townhouses and parks. I visited the area 15 years ago, the book took me right back to its quiet streets, green spaces and distinctive glass and steel design. The three editors (also the book's graphic designers) bring Layfayette to life, primarily through interviews with residents and photographs of them in their apartments. In their new book, “Thanks for the View, Mr. Mies,” which is due out at the end of the month (Metropolis Books, $29.95), the editors Danielle Aubert, Lana Cavar and Natasha Chandani, graphic designers all, offer a portrait of Lafayette Park very different from the classic Mies monograph.
Contents include interviews with residents of Lafayette Park’s towers and town houses; archival materials from the complex’s history; an account of nine days spent trying to climate-control a corner apartment; and essays on Mies in Detroit, the Lafayette Park landscape, bird-watching and a record of bird-strike deaths (birds and plate glass don’t mix).
At-home portraits of residents by Corine Vermeulen show Mies’s architecture as a strong frame for personal expression. Some homes look like shrines to 1958, while others reflect the lived-in décor of decades. Jacqueline Neal, an interior designer and 12-year resident of the Pavilion, the smallest of the complex’s three towers, spoke last month about living and accessorizing with Mies. One of my Favorite Books

Personally, I live in the Pavilion (of or Mr. Mies designs) so it was fascinating to read about the history of the Black Bottom/Lafayette Park area. This book is very eclectic in it's style. There are personal essays, letters, and history lessons scattered throughout the book.If you are interested in reading about the rise and fall of Detroit in a different light than the other post-apocalyptic books that people make Detroit out to be, check this book out.

Also, this book is definitely hip. It's also sold in the painfully expensive "Shinola" store in Detroit, so it's totally legit.

Fascinating Book and Creatively Conceived

I was barely aware of Mies' work on Lafayette Park and this book was a pure joy to read. Hats off to the authors for a creative way of telling the story; or, rather, letting others tell their stories. I'm glad it wasn't just a book about the architecture, landscape, and site. There's a lot of that here, but the human stories of the occupants are what really sets this apart. More architecture books need that kind of perspective. Well done.

About the Author
Dr. Gorham Kindem is Professor of Communication Studies at the University of North Carolina¦Chapel Hill. His award-winning documentary, Chuck Davis, Dancing Through West Africa, has been nationally televised on PBS and the Discovery Channel. He is the author or editor of four books and numerous articles in media studies and production and has produced, directed, recorded, and/or edited several films and TV programs. Dr. Kindem resides in the Chapel Hill, North Carolina area.
Robert B. Musburger, Ph.D. is Professor Emeritus and former Director of the School of Communication, University of Houston. He has worked for 20 years in professional broadcasting, serving as camera operator, director, producer, and writer and has received numerous awards for his video work and teaching. The Preface Does Not Lie

The second paragraph of the preface of this text says "This book is aimed at advanced students in molecular genetics and molecular biology." They are not lying. I am sure that this is a great reference if you are doing master's or Ph.D. level work, but if this is the text that is assigned for an undergraduate course, as it was for me, then go to your department chair and protest. You will spend $200 plus dollars and unless you are a very sophisticated student, you are going to have a hard time getting anything from this text.

I am a returning student who has a degree in a different field, so I was able to navigate my way through this text, with lots of time spent on Google, or Wikipedia, or just the dictionary deciphering what I was reading. Most of my classmates however were using this as a paperweight after the first few weeks, and that is a generous estimate of the amount of time that they were able to use this book. It is too advanced for an introductory level molecular genetics course. The authors assume a knowledge of the terminology used, so there is very little explanation of terms that they deem to be foundational.

If you are an undergraduate instructor reading my review and contemplating assigning this as the primary text for your course, please, please, for the sake of you students don't. Put it on library reserve as a secondary source and assign a text that is more approachable, or contact your representative at the publisher and see if they are able to do a custom print for you of just the most important chapters that you want covered, though this will be difficult as the text also make reference to topics covered in other parts of the book frequently.

This reminded me of another thing I really, really disliked about this book. When the authors referred to other sections of the book, they did it based on the title of the section instead of using Chapter/Section numbering (i.e 6.9, 8.6, 13.13, etc). This meant that unless you memorized the table of contents, you basically needed to read the entire table of contents to find where in the text the reference was. Then when you finally found the reference, it usually provided no more clarity than what you were reading in the first place.

One thing that I do like is that at the end of most chapters, there is a reference to primary research papers used to construct the chapter. This is very helpful if you want to go more in depth into a specific topic, but that only highlights further that this is not really a text geared towards undergraduates.

Great book but terrible textbook

I am currently teaching an undergraduate molecular biology class using this book (the book was already chosen). My Ph.D. is in cell biology, but I do have a general knowledge of molecular biology (some aspects more than others), however, I find certain chapters of the book extremely hard to read. It is more an encyclopedia than a textbook. This is absolutely a book for advanced courses and readers. As such, the level of details is staggering and impressive. As a textbook, it is not user-friendly, as it weaves story after story, often repeated from one chapter to the other, without highlighting the really important material from the details. I wish the authors had the main story separated from the experimental details, which may be interesting for the experts but overwhelming for students. All in all, it is a great molecular biology reference book to have; maybe a good book for a graduate level class, but absolutely not for undergraduate courses.

Ms. Carver won an Emmy Award for her Lighting Design work on the "2000 Sydney Olympics." Kenneth Hagin's book equips you in 10 easy steps on having your prayers heard and answered ! It is a quick reminder of our faith in God and the foundation of His Word which grants us peace and joy. Through discipline of the mind and flesh we learn to resist the enemy. Nothing is impossible with the Lord as your strength. Kenneth Hagin writes in an easy style. The book gives good Bible references which are expounded in detail. At the end of the book I finally understood what it meant to rest in the Lord. So many of us today in the working world are expected to be self-reliant and highly independent but having read this book I now know how to be God focused in everything. His Word is the foundation that is built on rock. Expect a miracle !

Healing is a gift. It can't be earned.

This book has many well-meaning points. However, even our faith is a gift. There isn't a formula to healing. I believe it's God's will to heal believers, but we can't think we can conjur up enough faith, or find the perfect formula. This book is based on the idea that you must have enough faith to be healed. Art Thomas has a better viewpoint on healing. He has a few things on Amazon. I just read this awesome article. Take the pressure off yourself to have some sort of perfect faith, and read this! It's so encouraging:

I was just impressed by the Lord to get this book. My eyes were opened up to the title because it just seemed that was were I was with my faith. Sense I have been reading it there has been many truths that the Lord has used to strengthen me on my journey with Him. A valued book in my library.

Great for a day trip!

We'll be cruising to Barcelona and only spending one day there. This guide is the perfect size for what we need - info on all the main sites, maps, travel information...without having to pay for a more expensive / comprehensive guide designed for longer visits. It's still packed with information...it even has a small phrasebook in the back. It's smaller than I expected, which is a good thing. They've really packed a lot of information into a totally portable guide...metro maps, dining, street maps - it's really adorable, actually!

Very Handy

The best map/guide in the world isn't much use if it isn't easy to use. And that's the beauty of this Eyewitness offering. It fits easily into a pocket, folds out quickly, and contains a nice breakdown of many of the essential sights. We purchased several Barcelona maps, but this was one of the two we actually used while we were there.

Pocket Map and Guide Barcelona

I am very pleased with this little Eyewitness guide book. It is the perfect size to carry along when sight-seeing in the city, but the print is actually large enough that you don't need a magnifying glass to read it. When we travel in Europe our goal is to pack very light, and this little map and guide puts the important info into a small space. We'll only be in Barcelona for a couple of days before a Mediterranean cruise, so this is all we'll need to see highlights of the city.

Fantastic insight into Musk and his ecosystem

The best thing I have read on Elon Musk so far (and from what I understand, the only one that he has participated in himself). Vance is an excellent writer, and you may or may not be familiar with him from Bloomberg Business and other high profile writings. I loved the insight into Musk and how he operates, and you get a very broad and complete picture of Musk as a driven visionary that is absolutely set on delivering some of the most aspirational goals of any human in history. You also get some great insight into the overall ecosystem around Musk - his companies (SpaceX and Tesla primarily), relationships with other companies and gov entities, as well as the important people around him. Many bios give you a timeline of the person, but little insight into the broader context and I appreciated that in this book.

You get unique insight into his personal relationships, how he coped with things that went wrong (not always a pretty story), and how he manages through both failure and success. Since you learn so much about his childhood and formative years, you get a good grounding on why he is the way he is, and how those relationships developed.

Finally, you get a lot of detail around 'green' industry, space exploration, etc. which really fills out this ecosystem and delivers an inspiring and educational view of one of the most intriguing people of our lifetimes. The book almost seems to ask "What are you going to go out and reinvent?" Well worth reading and even gifting to friends who may be fans.

Incredibly thorough insight into Elon Musk's life and companies

When I walked into Barnes & Noble two weeks ago, I wasn't actually looking to purchase a book. Usually, I go in, browse for 30 minutes, and get out. But when I walked around to the Physics and Science section, the first thing I saw was Elon Musk's face.

Inevitably, I picked it up and began reading.

2 pages in, I decided I was in this for the long haul and sat on the floor, right there in the middle of the store. 15 pages in, my friends finally found me and forced me to leave. But I couldn't part with this. I needed this book. Those first 15 pages captured me like so few books do (in fact, only one book in the past year has totally stolen my attention like this).

So I bought Elon Musk feeling on top of the world and excited to keep reading.

I travel a lot between Pittsburgh and Harrisburg, PA, so, since I'm in the middle of taking classes in Pittsburgh, I swore to only read this book on the bus, because I knew once I picked it up again, I wouldn't put down.

I was right.

The next day, I got on the bus, got to reading, and tuned out the world. Three hours later, I was nearly halfway through -- and WOW. Vance's writing style flowed right through my mind. No clunky sentences, no jarring phrases. It's such an easy book to read, despite the complex nature of the contents.

Elon Musk, if you don't know, is a biography. Yes, a biography. You'd expect the case-study of someone's life to be boring and uneventful, dragging until the very end.

This wasn't the case at all.

Vance opens the book at an interview with Elon Musk himself. The first line, a quote from Musk, "Do you think I'm insane?", perfectly captures the whole context of the biography. Because as you experience the story, as you see the challenges Musk went through to reach the pinnacle he's at today, the question nags at you. Musk isn't soft-spoken, or easy on his employees, or a man who kicks his legs up on his desk and snoozes while his companies mill around him. Vance shows how Musk is both the CEO and an employee of his companies, simultaneously the teacher and student. He gets in the work, asks all the right questions, gives all the right orders. His vision is THE vision, and if you get in the way, Musk has been known to fire you on the spot.

Musk breaks every convention, every tradition, every standard. Vance takes you deep into the details, from Musk's childhood and lineage in South Africa, all the way to Canada and the United States, where the bulk of the story unfolds.

When Musk looks at big businesses, he sees unmovable behemoths that refuse to change their methodologies. American innovation became a thing of the past. Technology and industry was growing - but nowhere near as fast as it should. So we follow Musk's journey from his small start-ups, Zip2 and X.com, and move into his larger, more permanent ventures, namely SpaceX, Tesla, and SolarCity.

I myself am a huge fan of Elon Musk. Still, until the past year or two, I only thought of him as "that guy who made SpaceX" and "that guy who runs Tesla." Until reading this book, I never knew the struggle -- no, the hell he went through to make and keep these companies. You think, oh, he just has a lot of money.

Yeah, now he does. But did you know SpaceX and Tesla were hours away from going bankrupt? Did you know that the Falcon 1 rocket kept failing, and one more failed launch literally meant the end of SpaceX? Did you know SpaceX tested these rockets on an island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, and would fix problems they encountered in a matter of days, as compared to months by standard companies?

This book is the first time Musk has explicitly let anyone interview him for a biography. Aside from a few questionable quotes that have been publicly denounced by Musk after the publication of this book, we're still given a tremendous amount of insight into his head and how he runs the companies. Vance interviewed more than 300 people and spent over two years compiling this account. And I have to give credit to how up-to-date the information is. There are several events Vance mentions that occurred into 2015, such as the first landing attempt of Falcon 9 on the sea barge, which took place in January, and he refers to the second attempt as being in a couple weeks, which means that Vance included this information on a very tight deadline, probably mid-March (the second landing attempt happened on April 14, 2015).

I want to congratulate you, Mr. Vance. Well done. Very well done. I'm going to reread this book in a few weeks (probably after the scheduled June 19th third Falcon 9 landing attempt, this time on solid ground, as opposed to a barge). Anyone who wants a ridiculously thorough insight into Elon Musk's life and companies should read this book. It had me from Page 1 all the way to Page 363, and even the appendices that come after.

This is an incredibly inspiring book, a important look into a game-changing business strategy, and a valuable lesson to the world. As Musk says, "If something is important enough, even if the odds are against you, you should still do it."

Well written, general overview

Solid, well researched book about Musk's early life, early companies (Zip2 and PayPal), and current companies (Tesla, SpaceX and SolarCity). Throughout the book, Vance doesn't just let a startling assertion or quote stand still, he researches events to give the reader a balanced view of what transpired. This is especially important as there have more than a few highly charged emotional events in Musk's life and it would have been all too easy for a biographer to highlight the sensational at the expense of providing insight about complex events.

Vance starts the biography by delving just enough into Musk's early life to help understand who he has become.He then launches into fairly detailed accounts of his early companies (Zip2 and PayPal). These accounts are invaluable as there is little else available about these companies that is reliable and not agenda driven reporting.

SpaceX gets the most coverage in the book, befitting Musk's passion and time spent, although there is a reasonable amount of time devoted to Tesla and a relatively quick overview of SolarCity.

Oddly enough for a 400 page book, I sometimes wished he would provide a more blow by blow account - for instance there was no insight at all into any board meetings in any of the companies. In addition, Vance does not delve in any real depth into the complex technology that Musk has created, relegating the very few verbatim explanations from Musk to footnotes. There was a lot of boosterism about the companies, and while Vance did try to describe a timeline, in the end the book had a lot of unconnected vignettes and stories.

Having said all this, it is a very readable, very interesting book. The 2008 triple Musk meltdown (personal life, SpaceX and Tesla) was gripping. Most people who have not been watching Musk's every move for the past 20 years will find lots of new information here, presented in a very balanced and entertaining way.
