This book is by far the finest text for Crisis Negotiators i have ever read. I am the guy who got the ticket to write the FBI negotiations program back in 1976. As an FBI Supervisor Special Agent and instructor in our Special Operations Unit who had a background in mental health I developed some of our basic tactics that are still used. When I read what Chris wrote I feel like Wilbur Wright participating in a space launch. Chris has taken what we started and moved it decades down the road. Chris draws on decades of experience negotiating hostage and kidnapping cases when he was in the FBI. He suggests that crisis negotiators get around saying no by asking the subject how. He also clearly presents the power positions in the negotiations process. Each chapter has an excellent summary. The only problem with his efforts is that he presents such brilliant insights that a new negotiator might believe they are beyond their ability. Well, they were beyond Chris and the rest of us at the begining. I strongly recommend that his negotiation tenets that range successfully resolving hostage and kidnapping crisis to buying a car be incorporated by all who negotiate. Granted that at first you will not be as efficient or effective. Learn from your mistakes, re-read his book and as he did get better and then have the courage to also write a fantastic guide for those who follow. To summarize what Chris wrote in one one I would say WOW..

Powerful; engrossing; a fine literary achievement.

I found this novel beautifully written and engrossing to the last word. Why is it out of print? I hope it experiences rediscovery, and a revival. The author boldly chronicles the experience of her heroine, Virginia Cunningham, a gravely ill woman in a mental hospital, from the point of view of that woman, as she struggles with the violent side effects of shock treatment on her memory and her capacity to make sense of where she is and what is happening to her and why. The writing is uncompromisingly profound throughout. The effect ultimately is a triumph for the author in revealing a Hellish world in which institutional treatments for insanity come across as brutal and sadistic, and enough to drive any sane person crazy. Hunger, extreme cold, poor hygiene, neglect, bullying by other patients, forced feeding, forced baths, forced binding of patients and of course shock treatments ---- all this is presented in gruesome detail. What the heroine endures and suffers is terrifying. ----- Sources indicate that when the book was published, Ward denied that it was based on personal experience. But apparently it was indeed based on her own experience, and we are told that "The Snake Pit" played a role in getting reforms to mental health care in America. ------ I'm in awe of the novel's power. I'm in awe of the sustained experiment of telling it all from Virginia's point of view, no matter how disoriented or confused or delusional Virginia becomes. And I left the novel comforted by the author's achievement. I do hope this book will be republished and recirculated. (I love the movie based on it, but that is another story altogether.)

If This Be Shelter, Give Me Storm Away from the Hills

This groundbreaking novel is based on Mary Jane Ward's personal experiences in the Rockland State Hospital (here renamed Juniper Hill) after suffering a nervous breakdown. The story told is heartbreaking in its blunt simplicity - the lead character, Virginia, is not sure where she is at first, or why she is there, and the reasons for her confusion become painfully clear as one turns the pages.

The point of view changes abruptly from first to third-person, and this was disconcerting for me as a reader. This is the only reason that I've given the book four stars rather than five. As I consider it further, it may be that Ward chose this disjointed narrative deliberately, in order to establish Virginia's feeling of constantly having the world tilt around her.

I suspect that even this grim narrative of institutional life is rosier than the reality, but this is terrifying enough. Dangerous patients, nurses who have grown immune to the suffering around them, and draconian "therapies" all play a part in Virginia's experience. Just the luxury of having a dry bed to sleep in, or an uninterrupted period of private time in a powder room, is enough to give her joy and the illusion that she is getting close to freedom.

As the clouds start to clear for Virginia, the narrative becomes more crisp and I realized that she was inching back to the "real world." I was rooting for her to make a complete recovery and to resume her life.

Sadly, Mary Jane Ward was hospitalized three more times after the institutionalization that inspired this novel. I understand that she still managed to write several books, including two others that reference mental illness, and I am now keenly interested in those stories.

Good, yet not good enough.

This book gives plenty of background into international finance. Unfortunately, it has some big flaws, in my opinion. First, there are not enough calculation examples. Second, there are too few questions at the end of each chapter. In addition, you must go to the author's website for the solution. Once you get there, you will be surprised to find out that the author has only solved maybe two out of eight problems. That's annoying. I do not recommend this book. Take a class from another professor who uses a different text book.

This book sucks!

Ok normally when you buy a book they introduce you to a concept and then they solve a problem for you. You then solve a similar problem to show you understand it. This book has problems at the end of chapters that were not even subject matter in the chapter. This is obvious in chapter #1 problem #1-#5. I know the professor will say you are an MBA student figure it out. I agree with this, but show me the concept and then let me figure it out. I am appalled at the quality of the information in this book. Sickening!

Book Not worth the Money Paid

Too much money for a useless book!!!!

I strongly agree with the two reviews previous to mine. The book gets you interested at the begining, but let you down afterwards. It has little depth in the topics and many flaws when comes to explaining things. In exemple, the "Fisher Effect" was never explained, but all the book gives you is the formula. There is little explanation about the components and variables in the formulas. So, you have to rely heavily on your instructor.

There are almost no calculation examples and use of formulas. The teory in the book is not well explained either. So, you get more confused. That in my opinion is because the authors did not spend enough time to present the material clearly and the editors did not review and edit the book to increase the readability and comprehension. To illustrate what I am talking about, there is a lot of white space in the book (implies it lacks substance) and the text refers to graphs or charts shown in one/two pages before or after. Compared to other finance books I had in the past, this whole book looks like a compilation of bad summary sections.

In conclusion, it was not worth the money. It got me confused and wasted my time. In case you have to use it because it is mandatory, rely on your notes and instrutor's lectures.

An obsessively dark and scathing tale

The Strange Man was downright eery.
This... to put plainly, was immensely frightening! But it was worth the scare to know how far God would go to protect His Own.
The good news is, Dras is alive. The bad news, while he's in jail, you have to put up with his obsessive brother, Jeff, who's become so obsessed with finding out the truth of what happened to Dras that he doesn't notice what's happenin to those around him in his life.
Okay, not only those who mattered to Jeff in a personally good way, but also the village bigmouths, like Earl, who headed a hunt to find Lindsey's killer in The Strange Man, has a bigger role with a bigger mouth. Flat-out condemning Christianity, first by the use of Dras with the false conviction of being called a killer (if you read the first one, it's no spoiler), then going further into insults and name-calling.
Not only that, but Jeff also calling out each denomination's materialistic hypocrisy with what they teach then a turnaround with what they publicly say outside church walls.
Then Rosalyn with how she scathingly condemns the whole church town of Greensboro for preaching love, love, then spewing extreme hate toward Dras.
As if that weren't enough for a dark tale (what Christian these days hate being called hypocritical if they don't want to believe it, let alone acknowledge it?), there's also the Strange Man himself, a truly bizarre and extremely evil presence among people, tempting people with half-truths and tempting lies, along with a whole gang of creatures to do things at his whim.
There are mysteries to figure out, betrayals that slap your face hard, yet there's also hope that's still prevalent.
Evil is shown with no sugarcoating, but not full-out gratuitous, either. So, don't worry, nothing R-rated here.
Even people who have a history of a dark past are to shown to have the ability and capacity to change for the better. Even if it comes with a struggle.
The writing itself is almost like dark poetry, and is extremely well-written far as I can tell. And if you think the title is akin to anti-Christian, it turns out to be Biblical, and relevant.
At this point, I'm sure I can't wait for this Dark Hour to come, to see what all will happen. I'm sure I will not be prepared for anything that will happen. Nonetheless, it should definitely be a thought-provoking tale to keep me up most of the night.

Looking for a really great series of books guaranteed to leave you wanting to sleep with the light on, but written by an extremely talented Christian author? Then look no further than The Coming Trilogy Series by Greg Mitchell.

I got hooked on this trilogy after being a huge fan of such talented writers like Ted Dekker and Stephen King. You know the kinds of books that make you jump at noises while you're reading it, but it's so great you can't put it down?

This series is about the Bogeyman or as he is also known as The Strange Man. A presence so evil that he's been staking his claim in the small town of Greensboro since its introduction. That is where the legends and myths came from surrounding late night stories around the campfire, geared to scare you. Only this time, the Bogeyman is real and you're biggest downfall is believing he doesn't exist.

Picking up where the first book left off, Enemies of the Cross continues to struggle to understand what is happening to the small town of Greensboro. Now that a horrible murder has taken place and the town believes that the killer has been caught and is now awaiting his final trial for the death penalty, Pastor Jeff Weldon believes that his brother Dras is innocent. However he feels more than responsible. When Dras came to him that fateful night telling him of the Strange Man and the evil running the town, he didn't believe him. Now Jeff feels that he has to prove his brothers innocence.

Jeff's faith in God is about to be put to the final test as the evil surrounding the town realizes that he stands in the way. They aren't about to let their plans to control the town and bring about the Dark Hour be revealed by Jeff's persistent investigation. Now more than ever, the town believes that Jeff is letting his investigation to prove his brother's innocence cloud his responsibility to run the church and will stop at nothing to have him removed.

Meanwhile the Bogeyman's plans continue to grow darker by the hour as the North Woods surrounding the lake continue to consume all life that draws near and with that, the more powerful he will become especially if he can remove God from the equation.

I received Enemies of the Cross compliments of Greg Mitchell who was kind enough to send me a complimentary copy to review. Being such a huge fan of his first novel in the series, The Strange Man, when I saw that his next one was available in print, I knew I had to read it. Once again, I was not disappointed. Since this is a trilogy, the mystery will not be solved in this one, but will come to a climax in anticipation for the final book, Dark Hour, yet to be available. I LOVED this series and have to rate it a 5 out of 5 stars. Any book that can keep me glued to the pages, and reading it with the lights on, is a best seller for the suspense thriller genre in my opinion. That is what makes an excellent book.

A Good Read!

After reading The Strange Man earlier this year, and its shocking ending, I was looking forward to Enemies of the Cross and surprised by some of the things/twists in it.

Greensboro is a creepy town and while I didn't find myself scared that often, there were a few times (especially when by a window) that I found myself somewhat creeped out (imagining if I were to all of the sudden start hearing some tapping on the glass).

While the first book in The Coming Evil trilogy dealt more with Dras Weldon, Enemies of the Cross centers more around his brother, Jeff. I found it really interesting to get to know the characters and more of what has been happening in the town.

There were a couple of things I didn't personally care for - one being how Jeff heard God talking to him in his head (page 285).

Enemies of the Cross dealt a lot with the spiritual realm (i.e. demons, angels), which I found interesting and, at times, bizarre (in a good way).

Overall, Enemies of the Cross was a good semi-suspenseful read that I liked. If you enjoy creepy and/or books dealing with demons/spiritual warfare, I think you might like this book as well... although you might want to read book one first because this book picks up right where The Strange Man left off. I'm looking forward to book three, to see how this trilogy concludes. :)

The development of statistical modeling in primary research is the underreported paradigm shift in the foundation of science. The lady of the title's claim that she could detect a difference between milk-into-tea vs. tea-into-milk infusions sets up the social history of a theory that has changed the culture of science as thoroughly as relativity did (the lady's palate is analogous to quantum physics' famous cat-subject), making possible the construction of meaningful scientific experiments. Statistical modeling is the child of applied mathematics and the 19th-century scientific revolution. So Salsburg begins his history at the beginning (with field agronomists in the U.K. in the 1920s trying to test the usefulness of early artificial fertilizer) and creates an important, near-complete chapter in the social history of science. His modest style sometimes labors to keep the lid on the Wonderland of statistical reality, especially under the "This Book Contains No Equations!" marketing rule for trade science books. He does his best to make a lively story of mostly British scientists' lives and work under this stricture, right through chaos theory. The products of their advancements include more reliable pharmaceuticals, better beer, econometrics, quality control manufacturing, diagnostic tests and social policy. It is unfortunate that this introduction to new statistical descriptions of reality tries so hard to appease mathophobia. Someone should do hypothesis testing of the relationship between equations in texts and sales in popular science markets it would make a fine example of the use of statistics. Illus.

This is an insightful and revealing history of how the emergence of statistics in scientific research revolutionized the sciences. Without using a single mathematical equation, Salsburg, a former Harvard professor and a prolific writer with three books and numerous articles on applied statistics, clearly discusses some major advances in statistics in the last century. He covers most of the major contributors to the field and dedicates two chapters to the contributions made by women. Salsburg also does an excellent job of showing how statistics has had an impact in the development of other sciences likes agriculture, cancer research, and econometrics as well as its influence in industry, where statistical methods are widely used in quality control and for the analysis of operational research. General readers with little mathematical background will be able to grasp Salsburg's lucid concepts with ease. Specialists will also enjoy reading this book for its interesting presentation and for the many biographical notations about some of the most influential researchers in the field. Shaky foundation

This book was hard for me to put down. It is not a how-to book. Instead, it addresses the very foundations of statistics. As a practitioner but relative novice in the sophisticated use of statistics, I was stunned and frankly thought it ironic that there is so much uncertainty in the appropriate use, usefulness and meaning of statistics. It played with my mind on what is real in science. The history of the statistical revolution he describes is fascinating as personalities, perceptions and interpretations clash across the years. It should provide valuable insight to those whose work depends on the appropriate use and interpretation of statistics. But the book must cause them pause as the author concludes in the final paragraph, "the statistical revolution in science stands triumphant...[but]...it stands triumphant on feet of clay."

A wonderful romp through the statistical methods and their practitioners of the twentieth century. There is a concerted effort to NOT include math notation or heavy lifting - this will not replace a stats textbook, it is decidedly and avowedly not meant to. Instead, intuition and philosophy of these advances are summarized. I am sure that my familiarity with the math helped, but I don't think it was necessary to understand the book. In fact, the Confidence Interval being process not number is the best way I have ever heard that put. I have a way to say it and I can only say it that way to be sure that I haven't flipped the meaning. This was a great example of how Salsburg takes big concepts with lots of math and explains them in intuitive ways. More than that though he makes these names from tests and bootstraps and whatnot and makes them real live people with stories and ambitions. Okay, but not great. The author seems to be so scared that people might not understand what he's talking about that he makes essentially zero effort to even minimally explain the statistical concepts encountered along the way. This leads to absurdities where you're reading a chapter on "some thing someone did that does something or other about this problem, but you wouldn't understand it anyway so let's leave it at that." I imagine the author wants to reach a broad audience, and science writing is incredibly difficult, but there are examples of pop science and history of science writing that do manage to give people at least a rough understanding of the topics under discussion. Salsburg seems to have given up on that goal, probably thinking that, if you're not a statistician, there's no chance of really understanding any of it anyway.

That said, it's not like there's a glut of books about the history of statistics, and it does highlight some of the main developments, discussions and battles (albeit vaguely), so still a 3/5.

About the Author
Sidney M. Milkis is the James Hart Professor of Politics and senior scholar at the Miller Center of Public Affairs at the University of Virginia. His books include The President and the Parties (1993), The Politics of Regulatory Change, 2d edition (1996), Political Parties and Constitutional Government (1999), Presidential Greatness (2000), and The New Deal and the Triumph of Liberalism (2002). His articles have appeared in Political Science Quarterly, Studies in American Political Development, The Journal of Policy History, and several edited volumes. Michael Nelson is Fulmer Professor of Political Science at Rhodes College. He is also a senior fellow of the Miller Center of Public Affairs at the University of Virginia and senior contributing editor and book editor of the Cook Political Report. His recent books include Resilient America: Electing Nixon in 1968, Channeling Dissent, and Dividing Government (2014), which won the Richard e. Neustadt Award for Best Book on the American Presidency and How the South Joined the Gambling Nation: The Politics of State Policy Innovation (with John Mason; 2008), which won the V. O. Key Award for outstanding book on southern politics. More than fifty of his articles have been reprinted in anthologies of political science, history, music, sports, and English composition.

After graduating with an MBA from Harvard Business School, Lillian went on to pursue a highly successful business career in banking and finance in the 1980's in Hong Kong. Her business acumen, drive and abundant energy soon led her from the finance world to the world of luxury department stores and boutiques where, through a leveraged buy out, she became Chairman and shareholder of The Dragon Seed Group. All the while she was guided and taught by her feng shui masters in Hong Kong and China - and she attributes much of her monumental and quick rise to success in Hong Kong directly to them. Lillian soon decided to retire from active corporate life and return to Malaysia to raise her beautiful daughter, Jennifer, and spend more time with her family. It was at this time she began to devote her energy to writing and furthering her study of feng shui. She published her first book in Malaysia in1995 that quickly became a best seller and the rest is history. Today she is Chairman of Wofs.Com, a feng shui franchise and merchandising company run by her daughter, Jennifer Too. She trains feng shui students and future consultants at her Certified Consulting Institute in Malaysia and is much loved by her readers, associates and students for the way she teaches practical feng shui in a user-friendly way, using ordinary situations and circumstances that interest people and affect their everyday lives. In November 2009, at the International Feng Shui Convention in Singapore, the well-deserved title of GRAND MASTER OF FENG SHUI was conferred upon Lillian Too. Immediately following this accolade, in early January 2010, she received the prestigious Brand Laureate Personality of The Year Award presented by the Deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia! There seems to be no stopping her popularity and recognition these days! Lillian believes everyone should know her secrets and learn how to adapt feng shui to modern life.
