Compelling and thought provoking

Every once in a while, a book comes along that transcends simple story telling. These books leave a lasting impression, giving you the thoughts and the ability to make positive changes to your life. [sic] is one such book, about a group of teenagers who want to break free from the normal constraints of life. They play a compelling game called Eureka and the rules are simple. Once they are tagged, they have 15 minutes to change their life, in whichever way they choose.

Jacob Thorke, a relatively poor teen living in the trailer park, has been pulled in for questioning of the death of his friend, David Bloom. As he slowly recalls the past few years of his life, we find out how Eureka started and the addictive nature of the game. David Bloom is akin to a cultist leader, with magnetism and energy to capture the heart of his group. Without the usual constraints and social norms, these teenagers would do anything to gain David's approval. From arson, to giving their car away, losing their virginity and starting fights, we learn that Eureka is a scary game to play, no matter how life changing it may be.

I was really impressed with [sic] from the get go. While it's less `murder mystery' as the blurb may suggest and more realistic fiction, seeing these teens equipped with Eureka and what they did was really interesting. Eureka removes all the fear in doing things that you think would get you into trouble, for hopes of bettering your life. From the righteous Jacob, to the psychotic and beautiful Emily, to crazy Steven, these teenagers are off the hook. The only thing balancing out their craziness is Nora, the on and off again girlfriend of Jacobs who questions his loyalty to the game.

The writing has its moments of beauty, kind of like a rough diamond. Its simply to convey what Jacob thinks about his own life, and it's really easy to fall into.

[sic] is a simple yet powerful tale about the possibilities of life if you break free from constraints. It's about the freedom to act out your wishes to achieve your dreams, but the flipside is the consequences of these actions can be scary. What would you do if you had 15 minutes to change your life? This book makes you think about those possibilities, and what's holding you back.

A Book I Couldn't Put Down...

As a book editor, I've had the privilege of working directly with many talented, creative writers on hundreds of books. While many of them are great and impressive in their own way, Scott Kelly's books are absolutely unforgettable. Few authors are as imaginative, and few have the ability to use their creativity to spark such unique, well-written, unprecedented story ideas, told in such tight-woven, intriguing writing that you won't be able to put the book down. [sic] is one such book. Kelly pours human emotion, thought, suspense, and story into every word, and like all of his works that I've read, this one is a literary triumph in the very tough game of writing. "You've got fifteen minutes to change your life..." I dare you to try to put this book down after fifteen minutes of immersing yourself in Scott Kelly's work! I know I couldn't!

[sic] is a phenomenal novel by a very promising new writer. For me, the most important thing for any book is pacing, and this book starts off quickly and seriously never lets up. The idea of sticking to a dare, even if it means that it will change your life forever, is an amazing premise, and the author handles it elegantly. He surprised me at every turn.

This is a great book and I'm looking forward to more books by this author. Pick it up if you love page-turners.

Great writing and a great story

Not affiliated with the author and I do have a lot of other reviews so this is not a plug. This book is about Chris a unique man with a one of a kind gift to exorcise demons, in this universe demons can inhabit people and push out their souls. Chris eventually comes into contact with other supernatural species "angels, weres, vampires, demons, native spirits and a whole host of others" and meets his soul mate as well as grows in power and perspective. If you are wondering about the title and like me am not a fan of christian fiction I will say this book does have the Christian mythos with angels and demons but also includes all the other religions as well in a non monotheistic way. Basically you will not feel this is a preachy book as that makes up only one dimension of the story and is not the whole story one of my favorite characters is the bear who is a native spirit.

Good
1: The writing is mature with few errors I found that it flowed well and that the word usage was both easy to follow and engaging.
2: The dialogue felt organic and real I could see people saying those things in real life and it made for good character development.
3: The characters themselves are well developed and 3 dimensional they all have separate wants and needs they all have their own take on the world and whats in it. I felt the personality of the characters and that added a lot to the story as you feel them as people.
4: The world was well detailed and was fleshed out as the story progressed. This means no big info dumps instead you are introduced to the world in a natural organic way this helps you make sense of it as the character does and again makes the immersion into the world effortless.
5: One of the big strong points of not only this book but its sequels "reviews of those to come" is its lack of genre hooks. This means no love triangles, kidnaps, dark and brooding vampire lovers, know it all sage advisers and amoral villains. The books thank all that is holy relies on original ideas at least as original as you can get in a genre like this.
6: The story flows by itself with a lack of the plot characters you know the type they had to do x for y to happen. Those idiotic moments where the main character has to be stupid for the plot to continue I hate those.

1: The world is our world but I would of liked a little more description in the scenes but this is a minor quibble just something to put down so that you don't think this is an unbiased review

Overview
This is an awesome book that is very enjoyable it has engaging characters a world that is unique and interesting. I felt it was a breath of fresh air into the genre without losing the things I love about the genre.I would strongly recommend this book if you like the genre as I believe you will enjoy this book very much. Bottom line at the price I don't see how you could not give this a chance, you will not be disappointed.

I know there are excellent reviews out there, but they must be reading another book. This book has a storyline that is understandable, but predictable. And not in a fun way. This book totally ruined the immersion factor for me. I missed the beginning of the book because the forward doesnt have an obvious end. Chapter one is exactly on the next line after the forward, and this persists throughout the entire book. Conversations between characters are not obviously separate from each other. Deciphering the words in a book should not be a readers job, but instead an editors job - even a proofreader. This book needed an editor or proofreader badly. I will not read further in the series. I know that the new method of self-publishing is cool and enticing, but it is giving the public very badly edited books.

I enjoyed a lot the first 3 books - a steady ...

I was looking for something similar to Jim Butcher's "Dresden Files" series and ended up reading the first 4 books of this series => I will post this same review for all 4 of them.

I enjoyed a lot the first 3 books - a steady pace, some romance but never overdoing it, a lot of action and some interesting concepts & names & informations => 5 stars and I think I might read them again in the future.
For my taste they're not as detailed and funny and creative as Jim Butcher's series, but still, they were quite light (although I get crazy when the 2 main characters are separated) and enjoyable.

I quite liked the first half of the 4th book (mainly when the main chars were doing their job as "rovers" in the wilderness), but then things started going downhill: some of the vampires were quite stupid, the main character still had his personality problems, there were a lot of open questions and the book itself was open-ended.

Therefore, 5 stars for the first 3 books (you could read only those ones and then stop), but only 3 stars to the fourth mostly because of the bad 2nd half and the bad & open-ended ending.
For the time being I'm taking a break from these series.
