Down to my last couple of books in this series...

This was my 11th Bill Granger book in the Devereaux series. Most are truly brilliant and the others are simply great. This was one of my favorites. Bill passed much too soon and we all miss him and his extraordinary talent.

If you are new to this series I envy you as I have but a couple left to read.

Battling the worst man in the world

In this 11th November Man thriller, Bill Granger has pulled out all the stops. When R Section agent Deveroux's estranged girlfriend, Rita Macklin is gunned down by a sniper's bullet and badly wounded and Devereaux himself is nearly killed in a deadly bomb explosion, it would appear that Henry McGee, the self-proclaimed "worst man in the world" had finally won.
Henry McGee is evil incarnate. His plan to blackmail a rich airline executive while at the same time framing the IRA for a terrorist bombing and various murders and other terrorist acts in Ireland with the help of female co-conspirator Marie Dreisler has Henry McGee at the peak of his evil genious.
As the recovering Rita Macklin falls into the clutches of an over-medicating Quack-Psychiatrist, it is up tyo Deveroux to rescue her and try to start their life anew. That would be great but there is just one problem, the spectre of Henry McGee.
Still feeling the effects from his many injuries from the bomb blast that nearly killed him, Devereaux sets out after McGee and attempts to stop and kill him. With many interesting plot twists and a brilliant finale, this quick read is definitely in the top 3 of the classic November Man/Devereaux series.

About the Author
Jeffrey M. Wooldridge is a University Distinguished Professor of Economics at Michigan State University, where he has taught since 1991. From 1986 to 1991, he served as Assistant Professor of Economics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Dr. Wooldridge has published more than three dozen articles in internationally recognized journals, as well as several chapters in well-respected books. He is also the author of ECONOMETRIC ANALYSIS OF CROSS SECTION AND PANEL DATA. His work has earned numerous awards, including the Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellowship, the Plura Scripsit award from Econometric Theory, the Sir Richard Stone prize from the Journal of Applied Econometrics, and three graduate teacher-of-the-year awards from MIT. A fellow of the Econometric Society and of the Journal of Econometrics, Dr. Wooldridge has been editor of the Journal of Business and Economic Statistics and econometrics co-editor of Economics Letters. He has also served on the editorial boards of the Journal of Econometrics and the Review of Economics and Statistics. Dr. Wooldridge received his B.A. with majors in computer science and economics from the University of California, Berkeley, and received his Ph.D. in economics from the University of California, San Diego.

Very focused on regression. Comprehensive yet lacking clear expanations.

If you are looking to utilize regression to analyze data, then this book should get a deep look.

Don't let the word "econometrics" fool you, this book is really almost all about regression.

It doesn't have anything to do with economics other than analyzing some economic data.

You will not learn, for example, supply/demand curve or MR/MC analysis.

The book is very comprehensive and has wonderful examples and practice problems. I really liked the practice problems EXCEPT that the book provides no answers to them. Bummer, because I would given this book 4 stars just for that.

So why only 3 stars? Minus one star for lack of answers to the great practice problems. Minus another star for fairly mediocre and often ambiguous explanations. The author seems to avoid making any concrete statements. For example, what does it mean for the X variables to have logs while the Y doesn't such as Y=b0+log(X)? It means for every PERCENTAGE change in X, it effects the Y (but not in percentage) in proportion to the b1. I couldn't find that explanation anywhere in the book. Instead, the author meanders and makes the reader make his/her own conclusions.

Overall, this is a very solid book that still has a lot of room for improvement.

Pros:
1)Focuses on regression, which is rightfully the most useful statistical method in econometrics and data analytics.
2)Awesome practice problems.
3)Downloadable data in SAS, R, and CSV formats.

Cons:
1)No answers to the awesome practice problems. How is the reader suppose to know his/her analysis of the regression is correct?
2)Mediocre and often vague explanations of the regression equation and output.

postmodern art professorial forensic opportunism

Dawn Perlmutter, a former Professor of Art, and NYU graduate typifies
the CSI effect whereby dilletantes believe themselves to be Crime
Scene Investigators and Forensic Scientists because they will themselves
to be and they see a commercial and salutory opening to advance themselves in a heretofore uncluttered niche (thus the basis for why
forensic science specialties and subspecialties have clamped down
on 'amateurism' and instituted strcter testing and licensing requirements for forensic practices in crime labs, police departments
and medical examiner's offices).

This book, like Perlmutter's earlier crude amateurish treatise on
ritualistic murders (why on Earth would CRC agree to publish such
rubbish ?), demonstrates a facile, dilletantish, non-scientific
and less-than-cosmopolitan understanding of ritualized criminal
activity, whether psycopathic, religious-based, geopolitical or
merely opportunistic. This book might be worthwhile (along with
her earlier publication) as a textbook for an elective or non-majors
humanities department course in the art or symbolism (phenology or
semiotics) of criminal activity, but it falsely purports to have any use
as a forensic or criminological tool in the understanding of
ritualized behavior that may lead to murder of any scale. You
are far better off reading the published work and books by
forensic psychologist Eric Hickey, or the legion of trained
FBI, state crime lab and other specialized forensic scientists
and psychologists who have ACTUAL scientific grounding in the
area of ritualized criminal behavior.

A remarkable study of one of Tibetan Buddhism's greatest teachers

Lama Tsering Wangdu Rinpoche and David Molk have made a ground-breaking contribution to the West's comprehension of Tibetan Buddhism in their 337-page work "Lion of Siddhas". The life and teachings of the great Buddhist siddha (accomplished meditator) Padampa Sangye has been vividly presented in this profound yet readable book.

A millennium ago, the Indian yogi Padampa Sangye visited Tibet, finally settling near Mount Everest and establishing a Dharma village of committed lay Tibetan male and female practitioners. In this seemingly informal setting, Padampa Sangye dispensed both personal advice and advanced meditation teachings. Many of the question-and-answer sessions were recorded by his disciple Bodhisattva Kunga, and are beautifully rendered here, for the first time in English, in their full vibrancy and intimacy. Of particular note is the way in which these teachings reach out to the present, addressed as they are to householders, merchants, wives and husbands, as well as to solitary meditators.

"Lion of Siddhas" also contains the extensive spiritual biography (namthar) of Padampa Sangye by Chokyi Senge, also for the first time in English. It begins with his actions in previous lives; continues by describing his life and enlightened activity as the extraordinary teacher we know as Padampa Sengye; and concludes with the life-stories of those students (of both genders) who continued his life's work after his death.

Finally, the book concludes with a set of five appendices devoted to practice instructions. These cover topics from longevity practice to the purification of one's speech actions (transmutation of speech into mantra).

Padampa Sangye instituted a new spiritual lineage in Tibet, the Shijay or Pacifier tradition, which has been greatly influential in all the schools of Tibetan Buddhism. His most famous student, the female siddha Machig Labdron, popularized the Chod or cutting practice that survives as an active practice in those schools. Now, a thousand years later, Lama Tsering Wangdu Rinpoche is actively reinstituting the Shijay tradition as a whole. "Lion of Siddhas" offers us a vibrant newly recovered perspective on both Tibetan Buddhism and the practice of Chod. Any serious student of both should study this extraordinary book.

The only thing that has been omitted, to my mind, is an index. The book is well organized into chapters and subchapters, so fortunately the overall navigation of the material is straightforward. Nonetheless, I hope that the publishers ensure that an index is included in future editions so that we readers can get maximum benefit out of its contents.

A stunning synthesis of Buddhist thought and practice

Lion of Siddhas is a joyful and exciting text filled with the miraculous activities of enlightened beings. More importantly, David Molk's work is a clear pipeline to the words of the realized meditation master, Padampa Sangye. This will be no surprise for those familiar with David's translation efforts for some of the great living masters of Tibetan Buddhism.

Lion of Siddhas may rival the translations of the Songs of Milarepa in its importance and profundity. As one of the great Mahasiddhas of early Tibet, Padampa Sangye has been largely overlooked in the West despite being celebrated in the Songs of Milarepa as an equal and a fully realized being, and his profound influence on the First Panchen Lama.

Westerners may have a hard time accepting the claim that in the same lifetime Padampa Sangye was also Bodhidharma who brought Zen to China, as well as Kamalashila who firmly planted the gradual method of enlightenment in Tibet. Yet, within the writing one clearly encounters the gradual stages of Indo-Tibetan meditation thoroughly mixed with the iconoclasm and immediacy of Zen and Mahamudra. Finally, all is combined into one package with the precision of Tantric thought and practice. Based on the text, the extraordinary claim that one being is actually all three of these pivotal personalities seems somehow possible. Whether one accepts this and other miraculous claims, Padampa Sangye clearly represents a stunning synthesis of Buddhist thought and practice that is functional, non-sectarian and refreshingly non-monastic.

David Molk's lifetime of experience as a translator and Buddhist practitioner is evident in the translation, which portrays his deep personal acquaintance with the teachings.

This book is an important addition to any library, providing insight into extraordinary teachings. I offer a heartfelt thank you to Lama Tsering Wangdu Rinpoche for bringing these teachings to the West. I hope this is of value.

Raymond Lloyd Richmond, Ph.D. holds his doctorate in clinical psychology and a license as a psychologist (No. PSY 13274) in the state of California. Previous to his doctoral degree, he earned an M.A. in religious studies, an M.S.E. in counseling, and an M.S. in clinical psychology. During the course of his education he received training in Lacanian psychoanalysis, psychodynamic psychotherapy, hypnosis, and cognitive-behavioral therapy. He completed a Post-doctoral Fellowship in Health Psychology. His clinical experience encompasses crisis intervention; treatment for childhood emotional, physical, and sexual abuse; trauma and PTSD evaluation and treatment; and treatment of psychotic, mood, and anxiety disorders. He also holds an FAA private pilot certificate. Dr. Richmond has written and maintains a public-service website about the practice of clinical psychology; the website has no user fees or advertising.

Amazing formatting to a great book!!

I own both the Kindle version and the printed copy of this book. I've had my Kindle over a year now (love it) and I have never seen such a professionally formatted book. The formatting makes it very easy to find what I am looking for.

This book, either version, is a great way to take a close look at personal emotions and how (and why)emotions influence daily life. I understand myself better having owned this book and if another version comes out, I would probably purchase that as well. It is a bargain for the impact it can have on your own personal insight.

I hope Dr. Richmond's other books come over to Kindle.

Concise, illustrated, to the point.

A concise e-book about two topics, or perhaps a single one, that everybody has to deal with sooner or later, one way or another: anger and forgiveness. Dr. Richmond doesn't beat around the bush or lose himself in unnecessary meandering: Anger is at the core of many psychological problems, and forgiveness is the most effective way of dealing with it. He goes on to explain what exactly we should and should not understand by anger and forgiveness, and illustrates the concepts with many examples from his own experience as psychotherapist. Some things in this book may be hard or unpleasant to read about, but that seems to be exactly the point. In the end, the message is a positive one: Yes, anger can cause us many problems, but there is a remedy that is simple to define, if not necessarily simple to apply.

Short but powerful

Dr. Richmond has written a short little gem of a book which can be read in a day or two. I would advise reading it through once, then going back and digesting each chapter slowly. There's a lot here in a small volume and you don't have to spend weeks plowing through it. What you do have to do is spend years applying what he has given you. As you do, you will become free of the anger that is making you do things you don't understand.

Unbiased opinion on events!

A really in-depth and unbiased analysis of events leading to Operation Bluestar and the Operation itself. The book gives a brief history on the origin of the Sikh faith and the grievances they had, followed by the political games that led to the worsening of the situation. A very informative read! Highly recommended for those interested in learning more about the events that shaped modern India

Never ever I came across a book that influence my life and the way of thinking and the way of worshipping GOD, this book THE SECRET TO GODS LIGHT . Ever since I bought this book on the 20th of May 2015 I never stop reading this book. This book openend my spiritual eye , Iam presently dying every day (not literally )so that Christ can live in me , never ever in my life I strife to live the way GOD wants us to live and understand the Bible and its code the way God wants us to understand. I want to thank the writer of this book (THE SECRETS TO GODS ) for allowing GOD to write this book through him I can truly see that you were the vessel and God the writer. Personally I think think this book is a must in every household all over the earth. For years I was ask question by my children which I could not always answer correctly . THIS book the secrets to Gods light make it now possible for me and my family to understand the Bible code thanks again for this blessed book.
