Eva Padlyat lived in an Inuit village on Ungava Vat in northern Canada. In winter, when people wanted mussels to eat, they searched along the bottom of the seabed. Eva had often walked on the bottom, helping her mother, but today – for the very first time – she was to go down below the thick sea ice herself. Her mother went with her to the shore and out onto the ice. The time was just right. The outgoing tide had pulled the seawater away, leaving only the ice above and the rock-strewn seabed below.
Eva lowered herself through a hole in the ice and, by candlelight, had soon gathered a pan full of mussels. There was still time to explore, she decided. But she stumbled and her candle went out. She was alone in the darkness, and the tide had turned. When, at the end of her adventure, she is safe with her mother again on top of the ice, she says, "that was my very last first time for walking alone on the bottom of the sea."

Kindergarten-Grade 3 Eva Padlyat had often walked on the bottom of the sea with her mother. This extraordinary-sounding feat is routine for the Inuits of Northern Canada, who lower themselves through the thick winter ice at low tide to search for mussels on the ocean floor. It is now time for Eva's first trip under the ice alone. She and her mother pull their sleds across the snow until they find a place to chisel a hole; then Eva carefully lowers herself into the darkness. Lighting a candle, she begins to look for mussels; she then goes exploring. When she hears the tide coming in and drops her candle, she feels panicky, but she soon finds her matches and another candle to light her way back to the ice hole. On the surface of the ice once again, Eva sums up her adventure as her "very last first time" for walking alone on the ocean floor. This look at Eskimo life today combines the ancient custom of collecting mussels with modern features such as airplanes and snowmobiles. The story is well-developed, with just the right amount of suspense. The watercolor illustrations are somewhat uneven in quality; the colors in the land scenes are rather garish, and some figures are awkwardly proportioned. The eerie shades of the ocean floor are quite effective, however, and the strange seascapes lend an air of unreality. Very Last First Time is an intriguing view of a little-known way of life. A Fascinating Story that I found through Five In a Row
By Learning All The Time
My children (1st & 2nd grade) really love this book. The premise had them leaping off the bed in amazement - "She goes under the SEA??? The ice is over her HEAD???? She goes by HERSELF????"

Every detail was interesting to them - the tools used to hack under the ice, the mother letting her child go alone, the small Inuit homes, Eva living in a land where no trees grew - and they had so many questions - most of which were answered by the end of the story.

We used the book to talk about:

1. mussels and how they grow & live,

2. tides, what causes them and how much the water level can vary between high tide and low tide,

3. the climate in northern Canada

4. the Inuits,

5. emergencies - what happens initially to our bodies when we are afraid, and what we should try to do so that we can get out of our emergency safely, and

6. pointillism and the artist Seraut, and we made our own pointillism art masterpieces with Q-tips and paint.

I did search the Internet for actual photographs of what Eva might have seen, but I couldn't find a single one! I couldn't find other references to the Inuit walking under the ice either. I would have loved to have shown those to my children.

Wonderful - a genuine adventure for young girls.

This is one of the best books for young girls that I have come across. A young Inuit girl is sent under the ice at low tide to collect muscles for the family.. this time by herself. She gets distracted, the candles burn out leaving her in darkness just as she starts to hear the water returning. What an adventure. I buy this book as a gift whenever I need a present for a beginner reader girl.

This is a tiny book which is full of powerful principles that can totally impact your life and change the course of your life if you read it prayerfully and with an open mind. Brother Hagin shares personal stories and scripture to remind us that God is a loving Father and desires for His people to be abundantly blessed so they can bless others. I have been studying the word of God and the principles that Brother Kenneth Hagin shares are in line with scripture. This book is not just a name it, claim it, get what you can kind of book. It is written from a Pastor's heart who has seen lack and wants to share the wisdom he has learned with all Christians, not so they can become self centered and fat, but so they can have resources to help others in time of need, and pay their bills, and feed their families. Believe me there is no glory in not being able to provide for your own family. I would encourage you to read this book prayerfully and ask the Lord to direct your steps.

Ever After The Story Continues describes who I feel took my husband in death. You will live along with me as you read further abduction experiences devised by the many universal entities and military rogue government and how they left me feeling powerless and leading a fearful life. The reader will read how even change in my new life led me into a different road of life of investigations into the 1947 Roswell, NM Crash and who was discovered to validate this known truth that occurred in Roswell. I was invited to join two well known researchers/investigators in this research. I have also brought forth into this new book my investigations of a few of my clients who underwent hypnotherapy as I guided them. It is the perfect follow-up for her first book

Gloria's second book is even more riveting than her first. She has outdone herself with this new book. She takes her own experiences to a step further. They are embellished with more evidence from other's personal experiences, so compelling you won't be able of put it down.
It is the perfect follow-up for her first book, showing how she has expanded her knowledge of universal beings. This book shows her complete understanding of the phenomenon of extraterrestrials.
As you read of Gloria's and others' abductions you will be captivated by these real life accounts. She chronicles how her life and the lives of others have changed due to the experiments of the invasion of aliens.
The first book touched on a single person's horrifying experiences, but this second book delves into other abductees ghastly experiences. The dark side of the phenomenon is even more underscored thru the knowledge she has acquired through her research.
The second book is more informative and exhilarating. It shows the dark side thru the eyes of those who have witnessed the reality and substantiates the truth of government and alien collaboration.
Gloria is special. Her truthfulness, honesty and openness will stun believers and nonbelievers alike. You will learn how reptilians, grays and other forms of aliens, with the help of our own military, invade and change the lives of innocent abductees.

There is so much emotional information in each page that it is difficult to read it fast.
I find it is best to read each event and then put the book down for a few hours or a day.
I am amazed that Gloria had to go through all of this.
My wife and I got to know Gloria Hawker while we lived in Albuquerque, New Mexico 2008-2012.
I read her first book shortly after we moved there and then got to know her and many of her friends.
Now reading her second book all these years later, is bringing me back in touch with the reality that she went through.
Gloria is the real deal, gentle and sincere.

Seven Famous Detective Stories

The Complete Novels

This contains the seven famous novels of Raymond Chandler who first wrote short stories for the detective story monthly magazines. Some of his short stories were later expanded to create his novels. They feature his private detective “Philip Marlowe”. These stories are a comment on the life of the wealthy in the 1930s. There were changes in their Hollywood movies so read these to get the original stories.

The Big Sleep.
Philip Marlowe is called to wealthy General Sternwood’s estate to investigate the gambling debts of his youngest daughter. The husband of his older daughter has suddenly disappeared. Is there a connection? The story turns up blackmail, nude photos, drugs, and murder in this family. Do the wealthy have influence on both the law and the mob?

Farewell, My Lovely.
Philip Marlowe is looking for a missing husband. He sees a big man go into “Florian’s” place to look for his old girl friend. There is a fight and a dead body. The police ask Marlowe to look into this case - as a favor. The investigation results in more dead bodies until that old girl friend is discovered. Will this scandal be covered up?

The High Window.
Philip Marlowe is called by a rich widow to recover property stolen by a member of her family. Her son married a nightclub singer against her wishes. The Brasher Doubloon is a very rare gold coin about the size of a half-dollar. Marlowe must find the missing daughter-in-law and also get the rare coin back. The police can’t be involved because it’s a family matter.

The Lady in the Lake.
Philip Marlowe is asked to locate a missing wife who said she was going for a divorce. He goes to a vacation home by this lake in the mountains. He inspects her last known location. Another wife also went missing. A body is found in the lake! He learns the wife’s old boyfriend is also dead. Was there some scandal that involved a doctor’s nurse? The lack of survivors means no story for the newspapers.

The Little Sister.
Philip Marlowe is asked to find a missing brother who moved from Kansas. He visits the last known address. Then people are found murdered. Marlowe finds a claim check for photographs. The investigation continues until the secret it revealed in the last pages. Can a snapshot of a couple lead to murders?

The Long Goodbye.
One morning an old friend asks Marlowe for a ride to an airport. When Marlowe returns home he finds police detectives waiting for him. The man’s wife was murdered! Marlowe is held until somebody paid a lawyer to represent him. There was little in the newspapers. Marlowe is released after a shocking surprise. Could Terry kill in such a brutal manner? If not, was he just a fall guy? Mrs Roger Wade visits Marlowe at home; her husband has been missing for three days. Marlowe uses his one clue and investigates to find Roger Wade.

Playback.
Philip Marlowe received an early morning telephone call to follow a passenger on a train. He knows little about this job, and learns others are interested for their own reasons. Was she a murderess who got off because of a quirk in the law? Is there a nasty blackmailer pestering her? Will somebody stop him? Marlowe has the same kind of adventures with the same kind of people that you find in his earlier work.
